9th outing underway

This is my first venture to Vegas as an AP. all the rest have been in AC. The first thing I noticed washe difference in rules. (In 6D) Dealer hits soft 17. Surrender allowed. I didn't know how to use the surrender (I do now) so I wasn't able to discard some pretty bad hands. This is the first time that Insurance really paid off for me--two hands at above +3 I insured saving me $190. I noticed one time dealer had soft 17 and didn't hit--I don't know why, but was happy to win the hand without a challenge. I play small ($10 limit) but did well first day ($750). I dropped $350 next session, won $5 next session, and won $225 the last session played. So I'm up $630--too bad I succumbed to the slots for $110--wake up call! Leave them boogers alone!

I was scrutinized once--I didn't realize it at first, but this PC was behind me staring intently at my play. When I realized my paltry betting was the star attraction I temporarily drifted into flat betting. No more trouble from then on.

******************************
My Vegas buddy is now in the sky at one of the largest casinos in Vegas. I can't wait to get together with him for a discussion of what the "sky marshals" do with regards to APs. He has already told me that they don't even look at $100 players--small potatoes. They concentrate on $1,000+ players. He said one guy comes in and bets his mortgage (my buddy's mortgage) on one hand! Another guy, a shiek, reserves two tables, one for him to play on and the other two for his four wives. He bets as much as $25,000 on a hand. Hey, zg, if I change to Eastern ways, may be this could be me! No?!

I'll let you know what happens over the next week. My fears about Vegas are now but a distant memory. I'm leaving for another session now. Good luck, guys!

Some places in Vegas are S17, and some are H17. Look at the felt carefully. (the $10 tables are more likely to be H17). And surrender is only offered at some joints. It's pretty inconsistent.

So, the pit critter that was watching your game was actually standing behind you, outside of his home within the pit? That's slightly unusual, I think I've only gotten that once. Was this a low-roller joint or a high-roller joint?

Heat can vary. Try going to the El Cortez and betting $1k. It will be fun. Actually, you really should check out El Cortez, it's a trip. Just don't sign up for a player's card.

I wonder what, if any negative variance there would be by adding the third wife to that table. Anybody have any thoughts on that?

Easy,

Actually the PC was able to stand behind me because I was at third base. I will check out the EC--it should be a blast. Thanks for the tip about player's card. I hadn't thought about it. A friend here in Vegas begged me not to return to where I have been playing for two days because I would be in danger of losing my comps if I was found out. There I must have a card in order to build enough play for room comps. But I'll take your advice and avoid them elsewhere.

Actually, he reserves 3 tables (my mistake), one for him and two for the four wives. Who knows why! I would imagine they're in a special high roller area, maybe a private area not accessible to mere mortals! The negative variance must be flying all over the place. When my wife joins me at my table there's enought to go around.

They love their player's cards at the EC. They must have asked us 5-6 times to sign up for one last time I was there, and we only played a couple hours I think. The same lady every time, too.

EC has some good games but for real ambiance

If you hit the Sweaty Spainard you will probably find it better than its reputation but it is sweaty.
But if you want a real different Vegas experience you should visit the Fabulous, Uncomparable, Western. Then give us a trip report. I have not been there in years (bet a few reds and hear checks play keeps me away) but back then there was either $1 or $2 blackjack and the high roller table was the one and only $5 table. Real friendly place, as soon as I sat down, the old timer playing third base reached into his paper drink cup, placed his teeth back in his mouth and said, "welcome sonny, have you played blackjack before."

P.S. Best probably to go during the day and if Jackie (Gougan) owner of the EC is still giving out Jackie Bucks then have some handy. The panhandlers that approach you do accept these even though they prefer cash.

Never made it to EC...

I started out for the El Cortez, but never made it. Wife called and I ended up at Arizona Charlie's on Decatur. Played a little 6-deck $4 min and held my own. Played some $5 min DD and won $15. Accidentally played a $25 chip and a $5 chip in a good count and they yelled out, "Green action!" I am so used to playing $10 min that I actually had goofed. I only wanted to spread 4 or 5 times, not 6. lol I decided I didn't want to play a game where a $25 chip brings attention. So we went to The Orleans. I played a 6-deck game and won $300 in about an hour. I left after winning a $90 and $100 hand back to back at the end of the shoe. Everyone said, why the hell are you leaving when you're having such a hot streak? I said in my experience every hot streak is followed by a losing streak, so I was quiting while I was ahead. Actually, I didn't want the house to see me starting a new shoe betting the $10 min again.

Well, tomorrows another day. Let's hope my "luck" continues. (Luck equals short-term, unaccounted-for avoidance of negative variance.)

I've been signing up for cards at other casinos with the thought that if I get backed off I can always return anonymously later. Wrong? PS- I've been trying to get to the EC but keep getting waylaid. lol

[In another thread you cautioned me as follows:]

24 hours of play in 36 hours? That's hardcore. Fatigue become a problem?
You know, this trip because of bringing the wife I have not been playing non-stop. Also, now there is someone to come home to, so I'm getting a full night's sleep. It has made my play a lot crisper, and my mind a lot sharper. I'm not making any of those little mistakes. I think you're right if you meant to imply I'd be at my best by getting sufficient rest. Actually, I'm enjoying playing a lot more, too, because it's never a struggle. Thanks for the advice.

I haven't been to Oleans, but based only on their reputation as being a sweatshop, that's a pretty hilarious sentence.

Here's the problem with a player's card that I made in Reno. Wander into an interesting joint for a first time. Sit down, at a blackjack table, sign up for a player's card. Within an hour, I'm backed off, and now my player's card is flagged, so I can never play for comps at this casino ever. I wouldn't recommend it at a place that you just have no feel for at all.

If you want to just sign up so you get marketing offers and junk, then maybe consider seeing if you make it to the end of your first session unmolested, then go to the player's club desk and sign up. they won't have any play recorded in your system, but you'll still qualify for any offers they give to people with a pulse.

Haha! Had I known! We went there because a friend worked there. They also own the Borgata in AC (along with MGM) so I thought it might be much the same. I didn't find it a difficult place to play. When I finally made some money in a good count, I just up and left. Had I stayed, I might have discovered another side to the Orleans. lol
