Maybe, or they could be entertainers, making money from views. There's a few youtube gamblers who do quite well with this, despite the gambling losses. (Also possible that the casinos allow them to fake their play for publicity.)
Katarina Walker wrote the seminal book on beating Spanish 21, and advocated for hilo tags and starting off with a negative running count. More recently just using A=-2 and a balanced count is more popular. Obviously the strategy is totally different.

I'm confused by your comment, Don. Both counts above (KO with and without A2) were presumably analyzed separately as above, and Burnitdown is proposing, in effect, using each count separately for playing and betting (and insurance) decisions.
Why wouldn't this result in the BC of the betting...
I usually point out that it's my money in the circle, and if they want to play it their way, they can buy my hand and make it their money in the circle.
Usually it shuts them up, and sometimes I get to sell off lots of crappy hands, which is awesome.
