I think it's because most people may not fully understand what's possible or the risk involved. As we mentioned on another thread, counting only pays off FOR SURE in the long run and getting to the long run can be difficult for a single person. But what's appealing about team play is that it takes a number of players and turns them into one big super-player who is able to accumulate hours at an ungodly pace.
If I had the capital to back it up (i.e. the type of capital that could be generated by a group of people all acting as investors) and had people, like you say, who I felt I could trust both skill-wise and in regard to honesty, then I would be more motivated to put in the hours and hours of work that it takes to learn to count.
One thing that was particularly interesting to me about the MIT team was that they were all young guys like myself (I'm 25) and it's hard to find young people who are particularly motivated to try to find edges at gambling.
