Hi folks -

I have been reading these forums and reading repeated references to a BJ Cipher. OK, I give up. What is it and where do I find it? Here are a couple links from a google search under "blackjack ciphers"

You're probably referring to zengrifter's posts on Cipher Blackjack. He is joking, as it is a blackjack system that has no scientific basis to it. Here is the link to the thread about Cipher Blackjack.

I also had in mind something called BJ Wagetracker that I"ve seen mentioned elsewhere on these forums.

That "cipher" site mentions downloading software, but no real link to downloading anything, hmmm.

Question-

Do you think it is possible to make a living ($500 - $1000/wk) playing BJ? This would include online and land based casinos.

You can make a living with just blackjack, but it sounds like it's pretty hard.

BUT, if you want to make money (not necessarily make a living) playing blackjack, then that is not too hard at all. Learn to count cards!

I'm pretty sure that E-Town Guy's response was tongue-in-cheek.
Yes, it's certainly possible to make a living playing blackjack, but it's not easy. With game conditions tightening up, and the ever-increasing use of technology by the casinos, it's getting tougher and tougher. While it's still possible, most of the serious players I know are supplementing their blackjack income with other gambling income, including live poker, online bonus hunting and video poker.

Once you learn the skills of advantage play, you'll find that you can apply them in many ways outside traditional blackjack card counting. Exploiting promotions and coupons are a great example.

Case in point: I found out about this one too late to play it, but a major city newspaper recently published a match play coupon for a casino in a neighboring state. With no stated max bet on the coupon, the casino was honoring the match play up to the table max bet at blackjack, which was $5000. I hear that some guys cashed as many as 25 of these at the table max.

That's what I figured. The idea of card counting is good, but when on an OC, the idea of counting is void. If sites are truthful, then on each new hand, the cards are shuffled. This would appear to remove any chance of counting since each hand is like your first hand.

Online blackjack is beatable without counting. You need to use the bonuses to gain the advantage instead of counting. Check out this thread to get started.

We are seeing more and more CSMs (Constant Shuffle Machines) in Brick and Mortar Casinos. This results in these tables being virtually the same as playing on-line Blackjack with reshuffle after every hand or even playing Blackjack Video Machines. No advantage to card-counting.

$2,500 = Value of $5,000 matchplay coupon
-$0.75 = Cost of newspaper
$2,499.25 = Profit per coupon

Not a bad deal! With 25 of those coupons you could really do some damage.

There are very few people who can make a living playing blackjack. However, I know lots of people who can make several thousand $ in supplimental income from playing recreationally (tax free!). Many of them get free vacations on top of that. That's enough of a reason for me. :D

What exactly does a match play coupon mean? Does it mean he has to bet table max and if a double down comes he can use the coupon for that?

I was kidding before about making a living playing blackack as I do it basically as a part time job. But I also thought he was referring to making that kind of money playing online casinos which would be impossible.

With the super-duper match play coupon, you bet $5000 and the coupon. If you win, they pay you $10,000 and take the coupon. If you lose, they collect your $5000 and the coupon. If you push, nothing happens and you can try again.
