are there any clubs or groups of professional players that meet in AC to help a new player learn?

It's unlikely that you'll find a lot of experienced players wanting to meet up, but you're not completely out of luck. My recommendation to you is to make some coffee, have a seat, and read as much of this forum as you can. Seriously, you'll learn more than you would be meeting up with a group. Get a browser that has tabbed browsing, like Safari, Firefox, Chrome, etc., open up a ton of tabs, and just read. I know this has improved my knowledge about the game tremendously, and I imagine it would work very well for you too.
