Blackjack Tournament--Should I play?

I found out about a small blackjack tournament here in the midwest. If I play in it, could it really hinder me from playing blackjack again?

Do you mean is it a blackjack tournament trap? Just give us all the details EXCEPT where the game is played and we will be able to help you decide.

Yes, go for it IF the prize warants it. If the buy in is $50 and there are 100 players you should expect to win 5000 min. Your play will not be typical counter type play, or it shouldn't be. Much of what you do will be governed by how many chips the other players have and what you have. You'll have to learn to size a man up by his chips like you do while playing poker.

Read Stan Wongs book on tournies. Any tournie I have played in I was doing what is in the book without knowing it. The bottom line are the rules of the tourney. I have won tournies by beating the % gain of all the players, which first I found out was around 135%. All I did was put in the min play requirements and played two double or nothing hands and took it with 400% with a measely sized buy in. Plus I got to keep the money since it was my buy in to start with.

This is assuming you have the same chance of winning as everyone else.

I just played in my first tourney. There was only one other person at my table who was taking advantage of the betting order determined by the puck. Most people were placing random, nonsense bets right after "Place your bets" was called, without looking at others bankroll and bet.

If my experience was typical, anyone who has even skimmed Wongs book would be at a huge advantage. I think this should be a factor when doing the math.

Incidently, I was BR1 by more than a max bet going into the last hand. I put out a minimum bet. The only way I could loose is if BR2 would catch a natural or split/double. He got the natural.
