Can a gambler win?

I've been going to AC for a year, mostly with a friend of mine who is not an AP. He plays BS at BJ, not perfectly, but close. He plays craps, and he plays a ton of slot machines, but no jackpots. So he asks me to check his win/loss statement online at one particular casino and this is what I found: Net winner--> $1,600.

I, on the other hand, play almost only BJ and VP. I have two small reportable wins for the year for a total $2,450. My win/loss is: Loser--> $3,000. Now this is no surprise because I consistently rathole blacks and greens. I might buy in $500, and leave with $200, with $800 in my pockets. I think this is often effective, especially when there is a shift change.

But all this time, I thought my gambler friend was losing and covering it up. I couldn't imagine that he was winning week after week playing only BS plus slots (not VP) and craps. Yet, he has done very well, just as he says.

Sounds like you may be ratholing a little much... I can understand a few greens, but almost twice your buy-in?

I can only do it when I play a long session. A short session makes it too obvious. Those wong outs to the bathroom is the perfect time.

no gamblers i know have ever really came out a winner in the long run. people i know who are students lost like $15000+ some more, we won't go into details of how one "aquired" the money....

i don't how some people can lose so much this happens to mainly be on blackjack to and have horrible BS, not to hard to pull one off the internet and print it out. i was glad to see one guy trying to us his bs card in the caino last time i went though, there just might be hope!

I spent a lot of time in pool rooms when I was younger. All the gamblers start out with the same goal--the big score. But in the process over the years they forget what their objective was. When they finally hit the big one, they are usually so much into gambling that they gamble their big winnings back in no time. We always used to say that the sign of a smart gambler is the one who when he hits the big one, invests his money. I can count the number of pool players who have done that on one hand. One player bought a motel. Another opened a business. But for every smart gambler, there must be a million stone idiots!

How many trips to this ONE casino per year? How many hours of gambling per trip?

Sure, it's possible for a gambler to be a winner for a year, especially at one property. It's possible for an AP to be a loser for a year.

Heck you could play 75000 flat-bet hands using only BS and still have a 1 in 6 chance of being ahead. You couldn't even call him lucky. Lucky might be 275000 hands.

We are talking about makeing it your job. Try and make a living and raise a family from it 99.9% of the so called PROS will be standing in line waitng for their welfare cheese and powder milk. Treat it is enteraiment. If you want to be a winner go to school and get a education and a real job.

You hit the nail right on the head it's the focus. Pocket full of money one day next day kicking the crubs. I used to be one hell of a sports bettor football and baseball was my game. Their were books that would not even take my action. I had one hell of a run for about 20 years then I lost focus and got LAZY not doing my homework and we all now what happens. The only good thing I had a real job with a pension, 401, and health insurance for a back up. I wonder how many failed PROS are standing in line at the free medical clinic or waiting for their SS check if they qualify for it, It's enteraiment and if you make a few bucks along the way great but always have a back up plan.

Depends!

aslan,
You ask if a gambler can win and the easy answer to that is, it depends on how long he lives and how often he plays.
Even the worst players will win at times but if you're talking long term (lots of action) GOOD AP's are the only winners other than the casinos.

You are right on one thing they gamble until they die. The other thing that stops them is when they are broke which is most of the time.

I'd say last year From June on he took maybe 12 trips. He would visit at least two casinos each trip. He rarely had a losing trip. Hours? All waking hours, except quick meals, over 36 hours at the casinos. This one casino, probably 6 to 8 of the trips.

So like, 100 hours of gambling at the one property that year? If 100 decisions/hr, that would be like 10,000 decisions. Probably less than that.

Sounds doable.

Actually, the 6 to 8 trips to that property also included visits to another property for a few hours each.
