Casinos that have died or are dieing!

The casinos that have died recently are the Fitzgerald, the Silver club closing on Janurary 10th, the Cal-neva resort in Crystal Bay Nevada just defaulted on a $25 million loan which could sell of the property in March. I also think that Boomtown is dieing and it just fills dead when you go into Boomtown I wouldn't be surprised if that dump ended up closing in the next 6 months. Not to mention the Biltmore is way off on business and it fills like a ghost casino with a few of the slot machines missing and the pit being open less than 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Reno

The Reno area feeds off of California and before the current economic mess, Reno was already facing death. The current situation just quickens it.

Though Reno offers some very good games, better games than the California casinos that have taken their business away, the average player does not comprehend the difference and those of us who understand the difference are not the customers that the Reno casinos want.
Now, many of the California casinos are facing serious downturns in business also and have layed workers off, for Reno it will just be worse.

Knew Reno was on life support, but didn't think it was that bad

Ouch!!

Was considering a trip for hubby's 50th...we like the Atlantis mainly as our first real date was there. How's it and the Peppermill holding up? We're looking at V-day weekend, and using our Worldmark timeshare...or should we go elsewhere?

The atlantis is thriving they completely remolded their casino and they have one of the nicest casinos in Reno. I actually think that they will have more business this year than last dispate the economic recession. It might even be a winner from other casinos closing. The blackjack rules are playable but only medicore. However 2 out 3 places with good rules has shut down.

In the lake Tahoe area the Crystal Bay Club is thriving and will probably beat last year's numbers especially because the Biltmore and the Cal-neva have turned to sh!t. Cal-neva just defaulted on there loan and the Biltmore is so poorly run that it will be off 50-60% and I predict will go out of business before the end of 2009.

Elsewhere in Reno you may be hard pressed to find significantly nicer accomodations, with the exception of maybe the Summit at Grand Sierra or the Siena . . . as long as you avoid the Atlantis motorlodge or Montego Bay wing at Peppermill. If you're looking to play, better games can be found in and around Reno. For the best pan roast, I'd go with the Nugget :)

I never thought I'd read about Reno casinos closing... shivers, this economic crunch thing is worse than even I thought. Casinos, closing... that's just not normal!

I agree that some of those casinos were a bit shaky when I last visited (about 2 years ago) - but I had no idea they would be gone and buried!

Wow. Best play there while you can. Sounds like Vegas is a safer holiday option though.

Oh, I know to stay in a Tower Room at the Atlantis. Stayed a week in one way back in '97. Tracked on Graves-BJ the whole time and comped most of my meals. Pit Boss for most nights did breakfast with me when family or the guy I was seeing weren't around. Still have my sweatshirt from there (that I can't fit) from that trip.

Basically, I grew up in Reno during the summers. Parents own at Club21 Timeshare, btw the Methodist Church and the old Comstock. At the 'stock, Sister and I would sit on the 12th stair (above the cameras) and Mom would play VP-nickles right below the arcade. I used to have the high score on some crossbow game they had.

And we'd work the C-C kids' games so that we got whatever animal we wanted. Knew when to go in, how EVERY game worked. Which spots were the sweet seats. And could tell a quality stuffed animal over the Taiwan-crap at 100ft. Man, those were the days. :joker:

Sandy,

Sounds like some awesome times growing up!! My girlfriend still has family in Reno which is why we're there 5-6 times a year . . . well, that and to play cards. We also love (except in the winter) driving out to the Bay area where I have family. Love the dachshund races at the State Fair and the rib cook-off. The bolded sentence above reminds me of a satirical book I read many years ago called either "Carnival Insider" or "Carnival Confidential" which tells you what carny games (ring-toss, ping-pong goldfish bowl, etc) are the easiest to win and how to go about it.

Then again, if I need to buy a book on how to improve my skills at ring toss then I should probably get out more! :)

Sandy,
I go to Reno about once a month and stay at the Peppermill. The place appeals to me, my wife loves the pools and restaurants in Summer. The dealers are great and the beds are to die for. I stay in the Peppermill towners mostly because I have a bad knee and don't want the extra walk to the Tuscan Towers. I can't remember the last time I paid ....comps are pretty good.
The have 3/2 natural; DD 10-11, on single deck. Granted the rules are better at Boomtown but I can't stand the smoke there and the dealers are 95 going on a hundred and deal S-L-O-W.

I see the Sienna closing. I think the future of Reno casinos will be left to a few such as Peppermill and the Atlandtis who had the ability to upgrade and can attract people. Downtown the Silver Legacy seems to be the model to follow. Many of the small casinos will close and probably should.

I have never found the California Casinos to be anything but rip joints.

Hi:

I am a new member and just wish to say "Hi" to everybody. From my userID, you can probably tell I live in Reno.

The truth is that Reno main income has NOT been from gaming since about 10-15 years ago. The main revenue in Reno now is generated from "warehousing". Many Calif. companies would rent warehouses in Reno to store their inventories. My guess is to avoid paying the Calif. Inventory tax every April.

I talked to many BJ dealers at different casino in Reno, and they all agreed that casinos in Reno have lost about 80% of their customers to the Calif. Indian casinos and for those casinos (in Reno) that survived are just barely hanging on by a thread financially. Dealers are now generally working 2 jobs to make ends meet. It is NOT uncommon to see the same dealer in two or sometimes three different casinos the same day. Why go to Reno to gamble when there are several Calif. Indian casinos much closer especially in winter.....no long drive, no hazardous snow, no hassle installing or taking off snow chains, etc. Reno casinos are really in a huge disadvantage. :(
