Counting on Accident

I have played a couple times, including a few days ago, with players I thought were counters but they weren't really. This is usually on SD and DD, however, and they raised their bets when "lots of low cards come out".

The guy a couple days ago looked at me and said "Wow look at all those low cards! Gotta up my bet!" and the TC was around +8.

My question is: What would happen if the guy admits this to the pit that he raises his bets when he sees lots of low cards? I am sure most people have no idea what card counting is so they wouldn't even make the connection that that's what they were doing.

Can you imagine what would happen if the PB said "Oh, you're not allowed to do that." People would lose it!

I do make the comment "hmm, lot of low/high cards are on the table, I think I'll stand/hit" on "strange" index decisions :)

Yeah, not sure most ploppies are even aware that high cards are good for them. They of course tend to come to the right conclusion on index plays.

Who knows, casinos have been known to throw out ploppies who make bets completely uncorrelated to the count, so I'm sure they'll gladly throw those who make a correct correlation at times.

I've heard that many times too. Some ploppies aren't as ignorant as others.

But other times when they notice and decide to bet bigger they haven't realized that a ton of faces were already played and the shoe is still pretty poor

In shoe games, they probably see a ****-ton of low cards and think "up my bet", yeah, then that would be totally poor. But, like the original poster said, they noticed it more on SD and/or DD (I think it was only DD, but I'm too lazy to check) where the TC actually fluctuates more. Makes sense.

Lots of ploppies recognize that a deck becomes stronget after lots of low cards have come out.

Yeah I guess the Pit wouldn't even care because the player is already playing at such a large disadvantage. (I did see this player drop his bet from $200 to $5 when the count went up and get a Blackjack....)

I was playing at a table when this one ploppy kept saying watch here comes a bunch of high cards. Then when he was right he would scream see I told you so. I dont think he altered his bet much or I would remember it.

They recognize, abstractly, that their winning chances are enhanced; but are clueless as to how to play under those conditions.

I once played a shoe where the table, including me, almost emptied the tray. At the end of the shoe, the dealer said,"Well done gang, but you didn't have to me a card counter to win at this shoe. Nothing but 4s, 5s, and 6s came out the first 3 rounds."

this is exactly the reason why i think too many AP's are paranoid about heat. Yes, you can get heat, but even a ploppy knows that low cards out first are good for you.

and of course, it would be ridiculous for a Pitboss to keep a ploppy from raising his bet after a comment like that.

It's no secret to these guys that card counting exists, the only thing an AP can do to increase longevity is to just appear like a gambler. i.e. make it look like you're there to have a good time!

Dye you probably could have gotten away with an extra large spread for that shoe and ridden the ploppy wave.
