Cover ?: winning in negative counts

It seems that flat betting in negative counts in the occasions when you're winning a higher percentage of those hands than usual would be apt to draw attention to your play, particularly since you increase your bet with wins in positive counts. I've begun adding nominal amounts to my bet after several wins in negative counts as a cover move. Am I overly concerned about the discrepency and should just flat bet, or is it a reasonble move? My sense is that it's a modest reduction in earnings for the sake of longevity.

I wouldn’t bother with the cover move. If you are flat betting then there’s no reason for the pit to be watching you anyway. If they scrutinize your play it will be during positive counts, not the negative ones. The best cover is to get up and walk away at the end of a hot shoe. There’s no reason to play through negative counts in the first place so walking away will give you cover and save you money. If you’re getting serious heat then just find a different table in a different pit or take a little break.

In a positive count I will increase or decrease my bets depending up the current total count and it has absolutely nothing to do with the results of the previous hand. This will not be machine like as cover often does play into things but my point is it is the count and not the previous hand or your bet sizing can never be right over time.

Regularly engaging in any sort of progression in neutral/negative counts can result in you betting way too much in those negative counts to maintain profitability.

Yes, I do adjust my bet according to the + count and not whether or not there was a win; what I should have said more clearly is that the consequence of doing that is there will often be an increase following a win. Not always, but often.

Thanks all for your comments. I've had several dealers roll their eyes and ask if I was ever going to increase my bet (following a series of wins in a negative count) so I was wondering if that sticks out badly. Thanks again.

Tell them you're waiting to lose multiple hands in a row before increasing.

Is this a place where dealers keep their own tips? That sort of behavior seems more common at the joints around here that a go-your-own. I guess they think a huge win would encourage more tips.

Once was at MB in LV (share tokes), the other a local card room (keep own) where the dealer was clearly trying to be compassionate with good advise after I lost several big bets in a high count and had remained flat betting early in the 6D shoe when the count was very negative.

There is a thread on this subject before if you look back in the threads far enough. I take it you are a in a play all mode for shoes. There are departure points for shoes when they go negative. I myself use wong out points to save money and for cover. I frequent the casino too often too consistently wong in and not draw attention to my play. There are some good points touched on in Blackjack attack book. It shows you the results of diffent styles of play against different games. blackchipjim
