It is worth the trouble to double on hard hands,when the time is
right?
what is the feeling behind this,made some very decent plays recently
on hard doubles but drew some spectators.

the "time is right" when...

...you are using a computer to make strategy decisions, and in that case you can sometimes double on hands like 3,2 too! Seriously though...no.

the count is sucking large, the pit is watching, you have $5 on the table, and are hoping to get a 2 3 4 5 6 or 7 against the dealer's 4 5 6 up.

As a cover play, doubling on 12 vs. 5 or 6 with a huge negative count, is a fine play!
