dealer error... but nah?

I make a 7 unit bet and get paid 18 units. I grab it immediately and try to be nonchalant about it and put back up another 7 unit bet. I think that was my mistake - I should have then bet 12 units. Anyway, basically at the end of the hand, before the next hand, the dealer gets this 'I done ****ed up' look on his face and calls over the pit lady. He explains what he thinks happened (which is what actually happened) but sort of hedges about it saying "i think" etc. The pit then asks me if I knew what my bet was and what the pay out was, and since I figured they would just check the cameras anyway, I told the truth. She asked me if I wanted to give the 7.5 uni ts back and I told her in a humorous manner "I don't want to, but I will" which got some chuckles from the pit crew, and I paid them there money. Obv. I fully intended to keep the money and took minor steps to prevent the dealer from noticing (grabbed the money like normal, tried not to look confused or overly gleeful, didn't wink at the dealer etc).

You have been caught, not a good situation.

In the MMOA we have a saying, "Strength and Honor".

I had a really stupid dealer about 3 weeks ago. She hit 21 and thought she busted and started paying the table. My first inclination was to correct her but I didn't want to draw the ire of the rest of the table, so I stayed silent. No one else said a word but I'm sure they knew. A while later she did it again. Once again no one uttered a peep. Then a bit later she had soft 17 and didn't hit it like she's supposed to but paid me for my 17. I decided it was time to leave the table because as much as I appreciated her generosity and/or lack of math skills I knew the eye in the sky was going to catch her mistakes sooner or later and I didn't want to be around when they did.

Here's my take on dealer errors. The dealer will make many errors, from incorrect payouts, to incorrect buy ins and color ups, to miscounting the cards. (It seems the majority or these errors favor the house, but thats another story) If a player notices an error that is not in his favor, he can have it corrected. If he doesn't notice the error the house keeps the money. So I play by the same rules. And as in most cases, the house has an advantage, because the player only has one person looking out for them. If everyone is doing there job, the dealer, the pit and surveilance are all looking out for the house.

No it isn't! I know sometimes I add up the total wrong near the end of the day, especially those 5 and 6 card totals, and I only play 25 hour a week and am only concerned with 2 hands at the table, mine and the dealers. Not surprising at all that looking at 5, 6, 7 hand for 40 hours a week would yeild some mistakes.

There are other mistakes that I do find surprising. A month ago I saw a guy buy in for $1000 and request black. dealer makes 2 stacks of 4 blacks, then places one 4 black stack on top of the other and pushes the 8 blacks to the player, who accepts them and begins playing. This mistake is much more surprising and unacceptable to me.

From my experience, it's always best to be honest. Those cameras catch a lot of stuff, and you'll get a better player reputation with the pit crews if you right the wrongs at the time they happen. That reputation can be helpful when there are borderline mistakes / issues in future - generally the casino will err towards your side of events if you're a trusted player...

Better to pay / take at the time, then have them ask for it back half an hour later when you've spent your cash....

No, no, no. I meant the dealer had 21 and paid the table. The first time it was an easy 10, 4, 7 that she paid the table on. I believe the next one was also a 3-card 21.

Well if it were just me at the table I would have done so, but there were 5 others at the table in various states of inebriation. If the eye in the sky would have caught it I would have no problem in giving the chips back, but it's better to let them take the heat rather than me acting as a snitch to strangers who may well be hostile.
