Dealer Help

A funny thing happened today, Sunday 3/21.
Playing OklahomaTribal .50 cent ante BJ. 6d. S17 DAS DOA.
A young lady dealer dealt me a 16 w/ dealer 10. Count was pretty high (KO) so I new I would probably bust if I drew. I he-hawed around and she announces that she has a face card ( not a "10 card" ) in the hole. So of course I ask to hit my 16. I had a 5 or 6 unit bet out, not really sure, I just knew we had a good late shoe going. I draw a 5. She turns over A FOUR. Then apologizes profusely. Then draws a 10 to a hand of 24.
My question is this:
1. Was she just preaching the basic strategy mantra, get to 17 against dealer 10 or die trying.
2. Or did she really misread the glass and think a four is a face card.
Comments please.

And this session resulted AGAIN in a profit of, for me, of $382.00. My wife was down $133.00, for a net of $249.00. Two Oklahoma sessions in a row , two net profits.
The wife tracked her 50 cent antes and came up w/ approx. 100 hands = $50.00 in antes. Still hate Oklahoma BJ, but hey , we're in positive territory
;)

There are games in Oklahoma without the ante, don't settle for that garbage. I don't know your unit size, but if you think you'll come out ahead playing with red chips you'll be in for a surprise. I'm guessing that those 100 hands were in about an hour. So you gave up 50.00 in one hour. Can your EV cover that? Sorry, this doesn't answer your question, but is the most important thing regarding your post.

As for the rest, it's impossible to know without being in her head. I highly doubt she was being intentionally malicious though.

If she is using a peeking device with a T up, and has anything other than an A down, she sees nothing.

Doesn't it have a symbol for a ten? I can't say I've ever been on their side of the table, but I thought there was a symbol that would show the ten.

How it all works is explained (eventually ) in this thread.

Counting cards AND playing the Oklahoma ante game? Isn't that some sort of an oxymoron?

Canceler is right. The mirror only tells the dealer whether or not she has bj; and nothing more. The whole reason that the peeking device was even invented was to keep dishonest or careless dealers from tipping off the players.

Your dealer was just trying to get you to make what she "knew" to be the best play. Bless her heart!

Thanks all, and yes, the ante game and counting is an oxymoron. The one hour observation was very close also. What is so very strange is that 4 or 5 weeks ago, I made a profit of $285.00 and then this session of $382.00. When the Oklahoma casinos first opened I swore I would never play red chip BJ w/ an ante. Times have made it difficult to play any "real" BJ lately. I should stop playin Oklahoma BJ while I'm still ahead.

Without that ante you would have made around 432.00 that last trip ;)

I wouldn't completely give up on it though, keep your eyes open, you never know what you'll find.

Goodness, there are definitely casino's in OK that don't charge antes. The ones that don't are gems, I play without heat(mostly because they don't care about red chippers, and they get so few card counters because of the impression that EVERY casino in OK charges antes) in some of the best games around :D. Just keep looking for good games, it pays off.
