Dealer peeking under non-10's?

I have lurked for awhile and this is my first post.

I was playing a 6-deck shoe game today and one of my dealers would sometimes check his hole card even if his up-card was not a 10 or face. I think he checked once under a 9 or 8 and once under a 7. He seemed to do this whenever I placed larger bets ($100+) or had a double-down opportunity. It was almost as if he was excited about my betting action and couldn't wait to see how my hand would turn out. I don't think he did this every time. Perhaps I paid more attention to him when I had more on the table, but it seemed to happen in situations where I had more at stake.

Obviously this is not a standard procedure as this is the first time I have caught a dealer doing this, and he didn't do this every hand. Any tips on using dealer tells for my advantage or why he might be doing this? Is he subconsciously just excited to know how the hand will turn out before we all play it out?

I didn't deviate from my standard plays when he did this as I did not notice any obvious tells and was frankly a bit stunned that he had even checked the hole card to begin with.

Is there anything I should be concerned about here as far as dealer cheating? Should I just let this slide if he does this to me at some point in the future? I don't see how calling him out on it or alerting the pit would help me in any way, just wondering if anyone else has ever run into this type of dealer "error".

I've seen a dealer doing that a lot, and I just attributed it to a sort of mistake/habit.

If they're using the standard mirror-peaker dealie, then all they will be able to see is if they have a 10 or have an Ace, depending on how they orient the card.

So it's possible you might get a tell, but I'm not sure how reliable or how often.

Thanks for the reply. I don't know much about the mirrors used on the tables. Why wouldn't they be able to see if it were a different card such as a 9? Is there something about the mirror or the way the cards are printed that only allows a dealer to see Aces and 10's?

The mirror only lets the dealer see a portion of the card, and the cards are printed in such a way that you can see part of the printing on 10-value cards and Aces in the mirror. I've never looked in one, but that was how it was explained to me.

Good luck

Take a look at the cards, and you will see the numbers on ten value cards are higher up on the cards that all of the other cards.
