dealers hole card

ok so this past week i was at a casino and was dealt a pair of tens. the dealer accidentally flipped over both her cards: a 3 and a 10. she calls over to the pit and he says to just continue with the hand. the count was right around zero and i was debating whether i should split my tens or not knowing that the dealer had 13. in the end i stayed on my 20 but was it the correct move to split my tens in this situation??

No doubt - splitting was by far the best move you could have made there. You have an average 13% (approx) advantage if you can guarentee yourself a 10 as your first card against any card, so when you can guarentee that the dealer's got a really weak hand, you're well up.

accept the pit gave you a break basically, and you dont want to open yourself as a pro that "knows splitting is the best option"...as most ploppies with 20 will stay no matter what, 13 or unknown hole card....:cool2:

I don't know, you could probably play this off pretty easily. And if you have a large bet out, it's worth it (although, I'm assuming he didn't have a large bet out at 0).

i think it would be a call based on environment, not count or playing best strategy. If the pit throws you this bone, because a lot of times they just push your bets back and re deal etc, its basically that you have about 90% chance of winning with a 20 vs 13 (assuming its just you and the dealer). I probably would leave it...but thats just me.:cool2:

hole card strategy says to split but

Though the strategy table will tell you to split everything except 5's, as in all situations where you split 10's, you need to think about more than just the max EV play. Variables like, do you play here often, do you spread here with no heat and do you feel this will anger some pit type, are you planning on leaving soon and not return often, Basically, you do not want to possibly hurt you longevity in a place with a good game and little heat to win two minimal bets instead of one.

You could also always ask the pit. "I watched other people split 10's before, but never did it, do you think now is a good time to gamble?" He will probably tell you to stay on your 20, but if he says, split it, I would go for it.

Got to ask you, if a casino would push the bets when the dealer shows 13, do they also push it if the dealer has 20 or blackjack?
Or how about this: just instruct the dealers to expose their hole cards when they have stiffs and not expose them when they have pat hands.

I have seen casinos give players a choice to opt out, let everyone play, and sometimes let a losers hand push, but have never seen them just cancel the whole hand. If so, I would be asking my question to the pit boss about what if the dealer had a natural.

Unless I had a huge bet out and it was a casino I rarely play in,I'd just let it go.Splitting them may cause the pit to pay you undue attention. But as suggested, if you ask the pitboss and he says split,go for it.

(above) my bad....this is what normally happens. Here is what happened one time, but it wasnt because the hole card was exposed, it was because the hole card did not read correctly on the auto detector for aces/10s.

There was a table once where 2 guys were betting the max almost every hand an I was betting $50. the dealer had a 10, first guy doubled on a 11 for 19, 2nd guy had 20, i had 19. The dealer then turned over an ace and we were pissed. So the pit boss came over, asked what happened, and asked us to push our bets back, but this was the last time he would "forgive" this situation. So its not really a showing of the hole card i was thinking, but a malfunction of the hole card....eh. That was super cool. I think it helped that those 2 guys were in for about a 2-3 grand each (that i personally witnessed) :cool2:

you are correct, you are always given an option at least in my play. my bad.

I still say in this situation...if you are going to leave and dont care about burning your relationship, split...give yourself away. A ploppy will never split a 20 vs 13, so you are risking more than the reward if you plan to stick around the casino.
