I was sitting at a table last night and I hear some commotion at the next table. Apparently, one of the players thought he won a hand and the dealer scooped up the cards and chips thinking he busted. The PC comes over and says "we can backcount the hand."

My ears perked up when I heard backcount, thinking they busted someone for wonging in, but I guess they use the term in a different context, to replay the hand. I've never heard it used that way before.

He may have actually said "back up", which is a common term for rolling the discards out and recreating the hand.

seen it many times

The player thinks he won and he wants to see the hands so they recreate . If the player is really obstinate that it was not his hand - they simply call upstairs and replay the camera back in case he disputes the recreation . If the camera says he was correct - they pay . If the cam says he was not - that is the end of the conversation .:) ;)

i've seen this happen many times. the PC or the dealer can backup the hands to re-create them exactly. watch how they put the cards in the discard tray- it is very specific for a reason.

A month or two ago I had to have one of my hands backed up/out for the first time, because the dealer collected on my winning bet, and I complained. It was actually quite suspenseful to see if the hands would help up the way I remembered them!

(they did)

One time I swore the dealer failed to pay my winning hand. They played it back and said yes, you got paid. I apologized, stuff happens. I think some 'effin plopper had sat down at the table, making me move around or something (pain in the arse) right in the middle of everything, so that threw me off.
