Discouraging the persistant wonger

In two different casinos I ran (or better said, he ran into me) a wonger who was so obvious that I had to get a message to him but he did miss it.

I doubt he was part of a team because he watched the tables much to closely to be a big player being called in but he would just come in when the count was high with a huge bet.

The first time, he wonged into my shoe won a hand, lost a hand and left as the count dropped.
Later, at a casino next door, on a 5 spot table, the count is high and he is reaching into his pockets while I am in the middle of the table with the only open spots on each side of me. I cover 3 spots, closing him off of the table and he starts complaining to the dealer about not being able to play. The nice dealer just tells him that I am allowed to play the additional spots since he had not already sat down to play. I keep the 3 till the count drops, color up and offer him the spot (spots) but he does not play. I leave the casino.

In casino #3 he is counting down tables again but not mine!
I think he learned that it is not polite to wong into ihate17's positive shoes.

This used to really piss me off. I would fight hard to get a table to myself, and there were certain times when every team would be in Vegas. These guys would come up behind me and start back counting so I would turn around and tell them I didn't want someone staring over my shoulder. Then they would try moving over toward the end of the table and I would just stop and stare at them. They would get uncomfortable and back away, but then when I started playing again they would creep back. I made it very clear that I knew what they were doing but it didn't help. Finally I just picked off their signals, and started using them as my spotters. Every time a BP got to the table I was there before he was. At some point I let him know that I would leave him alone if he left me alone and that seemed to work.

If the wonger knows that a counter is at a table then it is poor etiquette to jump into another players table. But if he doesn't know then he is just doing what it takes to survive.

I've been that asshole backcounter. I've jumped into tables when the players were winning and refused to wait till the end of the shoe or the next hand before playing. I've asked floor supervisors to move players who refused to move over when I couldn't physically get at an open spot. I once had to ask an obese women to move over who was playing 1 spot but consuming 3 spots because of her size. It was an ordeal for everyone to move chairs then I left after 3 hands. I can imagine what they were all thinking of me at that table. You need a really thick skin as a wonger because you get a lot of comments from players and you can see their annoyance and anger sometimes when you hit their table again later on.

Just so you know Ihate17 that wasn't me who jumped in on your table.

You are correct, you must find a way to let them know

I like Pro21's picking off signals and beating the big bettor to the seat but this guy was not (I am sure) part of a team, so my best approach was blocking him from the table by taking the available spots (and giving him the ihate17 death stare) I think he got the message. I can understand (just not on my table) because I think he was constantly wonging because he perhaps had a bankroll that could not support the amounts he bet if he also had to play negative EV hands.
I also found that his being so very obvious was annoying and might bring more attention to the game.

Making a whole table shift around so you can play 3 hands does indeed make you an asshole backcounter, in my humble opinion. It is behavior such as this that makes casinos less likely to tolerate counters in general, and more likely to use severe countermeasures.

System,

I am curious, do you wong in this manner if you are at a casino that you play at frequently? Obviously this aggressive wonging is good for EV, but if you play at the store regularly it seems like it might attract an undesired level of attention.

You can also try saying something like, wow whenever this guy comes to the table a lot of tens and aces come out. Of course you may have to move tables after that as well.

No it doesn't. The casino was pretty busy they would probably be more upset because she was shutting out others from playing. As for being an asshole what other option do I have? When playing against the 8 deck monster with mostly $25 minimums backcounting is your only option. I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to make money. It's just business! If I piss people off so be it. Don't you ever backcount BlueE?

Good question, no I don't. If I play a regular casino I'm a little more careful and try not to hit the same tables too often and watch for reactions from players who are regulars. Pissing off regulars can be risky. I have a good rotation of casinos so I don't hit a casino more than once a month. Most of the casinos I play have a decent amount of tables and I tend to hit them on busier nights.

In defense of ST, he is the ultimate Gentleman, a first class guy.

NO doubt about that, and a great player.

My apologies, I didn't know you were stuck playing such poor games. I supposed you are doing what you must.

Personally, I utilize wonging out but not wonging in. I sometimes forget that I have the luxury of outstanding games for $5 min, which many of you players do not have. I overreacted in my comments. My apologies.
