I was just on a trip with the usual suspects I play with and we scored a $300 comp to the steakhouse. We always carefully add up the meal to make sure we use every single dollar the casino has so happily given us without going over.
Anyway this time the waiter came back with a total that was $15 over what we knew we should be charged. We quickly saw that we had gone over by $2 and he had charged us tax on the ENTIRE MEAL which you don't need to pay tax on because you didn't buy the meal.
Anyway we brought it up and he immediately said "Oh no of course you don't need to pay tax on the entire meal, just the $2 you went over. I'll adjust it." He knew right away what we were talking about so our guess was that the restaurant does it on purpose because I bet most people don't notice.
The next night we had another $300 comp to a DIFFERENT steak house and at the end he told us we had gone over by $30 so he had to call our host to send more $$ to cover it, which she did.
Then afterwards when we got the bill we saw that the $30 we were over was the tax on the entire meal instead of the $2 we went over. So we spent $30 in comps on a charge we didn't need to pay.
Just be careful.
