This is probably extremely basic and maybe im just being thick.

But how are you suppossed to tell how many decks are being used when standing there at the table ? If theres a show , how do you tell how many decks are in it ?
Are you allowed to ask how many decks are being used?

Im really intrested in trying to learn basic strategy but need to find out how many decks my local casino (perth australia) uses first.

Asking

Asking how many decks are you using is an extremly common question. I always tell people how many decks I'm using and no it is not a counters tell. The basic stragedy changes slightly from deck to deck. But the stragedy trainer here is tailored so you can set up to have between 1-6 decks plus they have it set so you can pick the doubling and surrender rules. I highly recomend you use the trainer and try to get a 100% on it for a 100 hands.

2 methods:
1. ask the dealer. it is simple and they will be glad to tell you.
2. learn to estimate # of decks by sight - admittedly, this is a much harder way to learn the answer but will be necessary anyway should you choose to ever learn a balanced count system.

I don't know about Oz,but in the USofA,you can simply call the casino and ask to speak to someone in the BJ pit.As long as you don't call Friday night at 11pm,they will happily tell you the rules and minimums.
