Harrahs Ban

My good friend just got ban from all Harrahs properties. They would not say why but he expects because he was counting. The kicker is that this was his first night of a week in Vegas and several of us are flying out to meet him and spend the week starting tomorrow.

I know there are a lot of non-harrahs casinos out there but I thought I would ask for a little advice on the situation. He is little worried and I would hate for him to have to sit in the room all week by himself.

Thanks,
J

Ban as in barred?

When I read a ban from all Harrah's properties (I am barred from all of them also), I think he is not allowed to step inside any of them. Since he still has his room, I guess he was just backed off.

This may kill his comps if he had any on the room. If he came with some kind of offer he should have this on him in case they try to charge him.
If you guys come in and are associated with him by HET, with their paranoic attitude they just might back all of you off.

Since Harrah's casinos offer the worst blackjack in Vegas anyway, my advice is stay there and play elsewhere.

Thanks for the info. I think he said he was actually ban (Paris) but because he was staying in a room under his dad's name they let him stay the night (at Caesars). He was told while he could stay he was trespassing.

Because he is ban from Harrahs will he have trouble playing at the casinos not associtaed with them?

Thanks

So he was banned for staying a a room registered to someone else and not counting cards? If so that makes sense, and others are saying Harrah's gives pitiful BJ. Looks like the start of a win streak to me...

Play at MGM casinos, they generally have better games than Harrahs anyways...
At least on the Vegas Strip, I'm pretty sure the best Harrah's game is roughly equal to the worst MGM game.

I don't want to sound arrogant, but if your friend got kicked out of the Paris after one night, I think you should seriously, seriously reconsider your strategy. If you're playing properly, you shouldn't be banned from even the most paranoid casinos in one night.

In Las Vegas, there's no shortage of moderate-penetration, moderate-rule shoe games, flooded with tourists and ploppies, run by megacasinos with tolerance for purple action. There's absolutely no reason why you should not be Wonging out aggressively, and very little reason why you should not Wong in aggressively.

And on a separate note, mid-Strip is a great place for non-blackjack activities. If he's allowed into the Caesars' poker room, they've got a $3-$6 limit game that will probably pay better than $5 blackjack, and the Bellagio poker room has a $4-$8 limit game that is marginally tougher but still incredibly fishy. The key is to play the lowest limit available at the casino - that's where the morons gravitate towards. A $4-$8 game at the Luxor (which has a $2-$4 game) will be tougher than the $4-$8 game at the Bellagio.

Finally, on a completely gratuitous note, the Caesars' poker room has a much higher nubile young female to cranky old man ratio than any other poker room I've ever played in.

Doesnt the rake kill the profitablility of these low limit games? I've been told that you should be playing at least $6/12 games if you want to make any decent money.

To make any DECENT money, you'd probably have to play at a higher limit AND be actually GOOD (to be clear, I don't consider myself good, I consider myself mediocre and would get eaten alive in a $6/$12 game). I'm not talking about making "decent" money, just doing better than $5 blackjack AP (~$3-4/hr).

$3/$6 is break-even on the rake and $4/$8 definitely beats the rake. $3/$6 (Caesars Palace, Monte Carlo) tends to have downright horrible players, while $4/$8 (Bellagio, Wynn) has only bad players. In either case, standard tight-aggressive play will win you a few bucks an hour. If you know how to check raise and steal blinds properly, you can solidly beat low limit blackjack AP. Bluffing and slowplay are EV negative at low limit, so you don't need to learn them at all. The nice thing about poker is that all the proper strategy for LLHE can be learned in an afternoon.

All in all, I play poker for the same reason I count cards - it's fun. I make far more money at my real job than I have, or ever will, make playing blackjack or poker (or both combined). My personal opinion is that if you want to make "decent" money, you should invest in a solid college degree, find a job you enjoy, and then work your ass off at it to move up the ladder quickly. </sermon> :p

If you're good, you can probably grind $10-15 an hour out of a $3-6 game, depending on the players and the rake. 1-3 NL is typically a very good game if you can play NL. Lots of bad play, magnified by the no limit structure. Online it isn't a good game, but I can absolutely murder live no-limit cash games, and I'm not good at NL.
