Anyone in a rush to read his new book? The reviews aren't bad,and Lord knows there isn't enough literature on card counting out there.

Is it on tournament play or just card-counting crap?

"The book covers basic strategy, teaches the Hi-Lo count, and discusses index numbers, proper betting techniques, and the all-important camofluage plays. Beyond the instructional material are many stories of Dave's time on various gaming shows both as player and host. Be ready for some crazy action on the tables as well as behind the scenes!"

I believe he will have another book about tournament play. My sources have not yet confirmed that his tournament book will contain "crazy action" as well.

What's he been doing lately? Check his blog:

"This week I got called in to play a NASCAR fan for Toyota, an underground club DJ for McDonald's, and a new wave punk band member for Verizon (already scored a callback for the Mickey D's spot!)..."

Or check out in interview to get a feel for the "Bad Boy of Blackjack":

He has been a moderate success

In that I mean he has had moderate success at what he was originally trying to do and that is promote himself. It has little to do with blackjack or tournaments but much to do with getting the next acting gig. He picked a little different path, but it has helped him avoid waiting too many tables.

If he is as good at straight blackjack (non tourney) as he claims to be, he has sacrificed the ability to play in order to get his acting career going. Since the acting career is not hitting any great heights and he can no longer play, at least by writing a book he gets a chance to put a few shekels in his pocket from blackjack.

Blackjack is not his goal, it is perhaps his path to his goal, acting.

Very well said. I think Victor Nacht said it perfectly when he called Dave "This generation's Kenny Uston."

You don't see the similarities? Uston was a shameless self-promoter. He was a very smart guy but not a great blackjack player. He was all about getting his name and picture in the public eye. He was always writing another book (about half of which were about blackjack), appearing on TV, endorsing a new personal computer system, or anything else he could get his face on.

Dave is also a very smart guy but his priority is getting himself seen and heard. He’s publicly selling the “bad boy” persona instead of playing BJ anonymously. I'm not trying to put him down or anything. I just think he has his sights set on something bigger than BJ.

A little more on comparisons

Uston made real money playing blackjack but wanted the fame.
Though I do not know Dave, I think it is obvious he wants fame in that he wants an acting career. Also, I think he made a decision that blackjack today is difficult to make a full time job and those who can must do it under the radar, which is definately against his personality.
Now if he could make a big score in a tournament he sees that as a big payday that might transfer itself into other big paydays in the acting field. In the meantime he has devoloped a character that will continue to get invites to these televised tournaments because he has entertainment value to the producers.

Dave vs Uston

Your shameless promotion comparison maybe similar, but to say that Uston was not a great Blackjack player is simply false. And any playing comparison between Blackjack Hall Of Famer Uston and This Hollywood cat is a joke.

Don't take my word for it. Ask the guy who trained him:

"All the time Ken worked for me he broke even. All those trips we made, he didn’t win any money. I don’t think he was dishonest. I think he spent so much time trying to put on an act that he lost his edge." - Al Francesco

Although I guess it is wrong to say that he wasn't a strong player. He could beat the game, he just ended up giving it all back to the casinos.
