How far would you drive for a match play coupon? Free slot play? AND for how much?

I once flew to Vegas, then drove to Laughlin only because of a free slot play offer. I had almost $500 in free slot play for the month of June and again for the month of July. Flew in the last day of the month, flew home red-eye on the first, with some $700 in cash and two great dinners. It was a perfect storm of events as I happened to be off from the 30th to the 3rd and got a great airfare- $99 going, $79 coming back. Was a bit much going NYC-Laughlin-NYC in less than 48 hours, but I might do it again if the situation arose.

Very cool! I knew someone would have a good story.

Depends on the value of the coupon. One way to think of it is that your coupon subsidizes your travel expenses. Then whatever else you do for AP is pure profit. How much does it cost you to get to that casino?

Your question was incomplete,

so does my answer...

Ideally it depends upon:
1) Travel time
2) EV value of coupon
3) My mood to play
4) Other alternatives
5) Heat at coupon store
6) Travel price

Inshort 25miles one way for 500$ ev coupon, yes..
100miles for 500$ ev coupon, border-line may be..
200miles for 500$ ev coupon, no way..

Calculate your travel costs. Calculate the EV of your coupons.

The effective EV for your coupons is the original EV, minus the travel costs.

If the effective EV is negative, don't travel (play them if you are around anyway).
If the effective EV is positive, calculate variance of your coupon play. If the effective EV compared to it's variance justify a play (kelly or CEV) - go for it.

I traveled to Mohegan Sun in Connecticut (I'm from NJ) last summer because they were giving $100 free slot play. Effective EV was $65 after gas and tolls, and I also made a side trip to visit Mystic Seaport. I turned it into $140 cash. Not bad for 6 hours of driving.

A couple years back I flew almost 2,000 miles to play a ridiculously large matchplay but I did it more for the story then the $1.xx per mile in EV that it provided.

I'd need at least $2/mile (one way). It costs me around $0.50 per mile for travel expenses, so round trip that's $1/mile. If I average 60 mph, that works out to $30/hr. If i weren't so busy and the weather was nice, I'd do it for less and ride the bike. If there is a playable game there other than the coupon play, then the amount of the coupon is irrelevant, and I'd just consider it a bonus. Match play, free slot play, doesn't really matter unless the matchplay is so huge that variance becomes an issue, but for the most part I'd only be concerned with the EV/mile.
