I have friends who are...were pros. Best to keep the day job and hit it on the weekends vacations etc.

You need to establish a track record of employment for credit purposes, health care, SS, etc.

One famous pro I know depends on his wife for health care, credit etc. while he tries to make a go of it being an AP, and he is one of the best.

Keep the day job, have a normal life as best you can.;)

Besides, the games are *generally* not there anymore.:(

It's a different mentality from the United States.

I'm not saying one way is better than the other, but people in the US are more likely to "live to work" and find satisfaction more in work-related things (even sometimes at the cost of a personal life). People in Europe are more likely to "work to live" and find satisfaction in enjoying the finer things in life, such as sitting with friends and drinking a nice bottle of wine (even sometimes at the cost of succeeding in business).

Or, in the case of Italians, the finer things in life means having six girlfriends and sexing themselves to an early death. Which brings me back to my original comment ... I'm not saying one way is better than the other. :)

I'll regret this tomorrow - never thought of it that way lol.

On the one hand, BJ is the reason I haven't worked in 9 years, shameful as it is. And it is. But somewhere along the line, I both hated it, loved it, and tried to understand it better as I went along.

On the other, never had to card-count, like you are probably thinking.

My games no longer exist for me. They may in Italy, don't know.

If I ever was, I ain't now lol.

I noticed in Aruba that dinners in restaurants were by reservation, but once there they were very relaxing. Servers waited for you to have a few drinks, decide, your meal, waited for you to finish ... all so you had plenty of time to relax and talk with your companions. We'd spend 2-3 hours on dinner. I was told it's because they cater to so many Europeans and that's what they expect. Back home in the USofA it now annoys me to eat out and have a server at my elbow every second looking to take my order, my plate or give me the bill.

I got to like living European style. Not sure my wife would liked the six girlfriends part ... it would quickly become 6 GF and 0 wife.

to answer the original question: I would guess there are about 10-15 pros that post on here but i could be way off. Im defining a "pro" as one that relies almost entirely on advantage play to pay the bills (not necessarily just blackjack card counting).

It' really possible or you will always need a "normal" side job? Its definitely possible as i have friends that have done it/still do it; however, they were/are not relying solely on card counting thats for sure. Having many skills up your sleeve is key to success.

One problem with AP is that drawing your living and recreational expenses from your bankroll increases your RoR a whole bunch. But conversely, having a even a small steady income not subject to risk decreases your RoR a whole bunch.

So if I were going to go full-time as an AP now, I'd be sure to have a part-time job too. A weekend job would be ideal. What would be best of all would be to have a pension of some kind, then you could be a traveling AP.

Right now because I have a good full-time job it allows me to play to an enormous win rate/RoR. But if I didn't have my job I'd definitely be a red chipper, and that's a tough grind.

Neither here or there, and I guess not relevant, but you hit a soft spot there for me.

We honeymooned in Aruba 12 years ago. That now seem like 120 years ago - time flies when you're having fun lmao. OK, not true lol.

Anyway, we stopped at a casino. I pretended I knew how to play BJ to look good lol. After the third time, maybe $300 and 35 minutes later, the dealer asked me "sir, are you sure you want to hit that 21?" I decided then I would learn a little more about the game since I already knew I would have to play it again someday since she loved to gamble and I hated it.

If not for that day, none of you would have to put up with me today lol.

We did have some great dinners there - is it the "Buccaneer" or something that had fish in aquariums? Great steak dinner somewhere too.
