I was playing at a store last night that offered the "match the dealer" side bet - if either of the players cards matched the rank of the dealers up card, the player is paid 4 to 1 on the side bet. If the card is a "perfect match" (suited match) the player is paid 14 to 1. The minimum bet for the side bet was $1 but the player isn't allowed to wager more than his bet in the main blackjack circle, and it states this on the placard on the table.
This guy bets $10 for the regular blackjack game, and puts $20 on the match the dealer side bet. He's sitting in chair 3, and the dealer begins to deal. Dealer deals a card to the first two people then gets to this guy and realizes he bet more on the match then his blackjack wager so the dealer pushes back $10 of his match bet, and deals him a card (a 10). Dealer continues to deal and deals himself a 4 of spades as an upcard.....then gives this guy a 4 of spades to go with his 10. Dealer proceeds to pay him $140 for the match but the guy said that he wanted to be paid on the $20 he wagered since the dealer had begun dealing before catching the incorrect bet.
Pit critter comes over, told the guy his bet was wrong, and showed him the placard. Guy says he wants to hear it from the Casino Control Commission. PC calls the shift manager over, who agrees with the PC, that they're only paying this guy $140. Guy says he wants the CCC to come over and tell him that, but the shift manager says he needs to go make a complaint with them. Guy gets up from the table and goes to make his complaint.
Who do you think is correct here? I can see both sides of the story: the player says the dealer accepted the bet since he started to deal, but the casino says the guys bet was incorrect in the first place....and the dealer did push his money back BEFORE the perfect match was dealt.
I'll follow up with what the CCC ruled later but I was certainly intrigued by the situation so I thought it would make for some good conversation here.....
