Interesting Situation

I was playing at a store last night that offered the "match the dealer" side bet - if either of the players cards matched the rank of the dealers up card, the player is paid 4 to 1 on the side bet. If the card is a "perfect match" (suited match) the player is paid 14 to 1. The minimum bet for the side bet was $1 but the player isn't allowed to wager more than his bet in the main blackjack circle, and it states this on the placard on the table.

This guy bets $10 for the regular blackjack game, and puts $20 on the match the dealer side bet. He's sitting in chair 3, and the dealer begins to deal. Dealer deals a card to the first two people then gets to this guy and realizes he bet more on the match then his blackjack wager so the dealer pushes back $10 of his match bet, and deals him a card (a 10). Dealer continues to deal and deals himself a 4 of spades as an upcard.....then gives this guy a 4 of spades to go with his 10. Dealer proceeds to pay him $140 for the match but the guy said that he wanted to be paid on the $20 he wagered since the dealer had begun dealing before catching the incorrect bet.

Pit critter comes over, told the guy his bet was wrong, and showed him the placard. Guy says he wants to hear it from the Casino Control Commission. PC calls the shift manager over, who agrees with the PC, that they're only paying this guy $140. Guy says he wants the CCC to come over and tell him that, but the shift manager says he needs to go make a complaint with them. Guy gets up from the table and goes to make his complaint.

Who do you think is correct here? I can see both sides of the story: the player says the dealer accepted the bet since he started to deal, but the casino says the guys bet was incorrect in the first place....and the dealer did push his money back BEFORE the perfect match was dealt.

I'll follow up with what the CCC ruled later but I was certainly intrigued by the situation so I thought it would make for some good conversation here.....

I don't know the rules in this situation, but I would observe that the guy wouldn't have made a fuss if he hadn't matched. He would not have insisted that they take his full $20! If he wanted to object he should have done it when the dealer first pushed his $10 back.

Edit: I just realized this is my first post on this forum, even though I have been reading it for some time. Lame first post ;(

I think he should get $140 only. The incorrect bet was caught before he won. If it was only realised when the dealer was paying him winners then it's a different situation.
And if the player had lost the side bet and the dealer never realised, I will bet my car he would've asked for $10 back.

The bet is clearly NOT acceptable.

Open and shut case.

That is a POSTED rule, not subject to change.

Nah, you're fine.

The truly lame first posts are the ones that start out "Hi, I'm new here", like we couldn't tell that from the post count, and the fact we haven't seen the name before.

Welcome to the forums!

While I don't think the guy will win, you never know.
I was playing at a table clearly marked no mid-shoe entry. Guy comes along, sits down and places a bet. I figure I got a free hand and will only say something if I lose. I draw something like 15 or 16 and the dealer has a face showing. Before the dealer gives a card to anyone, I object and say it should be a dead hand. Pit says play it out and you can decide after the hand. I bust, dealer bust and player who just sat down wins. Pit calls the whole hand dead and new player goes ballistic.

Last week I put a $15 bet on one of my hands at a $10 min/multiples of $10 table (by mistake - a $10 and a $5 instead of 2 $5's).

The hand lost. after the round was over, the PB and the dealer had a quick chat - and gave me back $5 without my even asking, explaining the bet should have been $10....

That's good customer relations for you.

So as surprising as it may seem, the player came back about 10 minutes later with a guy from the Casino Control Commission......CCC guy said to the pit they need to pay him $140, and they did!

After the player left to get the CCC, the dealer was saying that the guy was taking a shot and he does it all the time there. Seems like a strange kind of shot to take to me, but who knows. I really didn't think the CCC would side with the player but I could see both sides of the situation.

Since it's stated on the rules, and the dealer did push back his extra 10 bucks bet, then the House is right.
