Jumping up my game

I'd thought I'd report on my experience on jumping to the next level of play. I normally play lower limits games but decided to jump up to the 25min table for the thrill of it. I started heads up with the dealer and was holding my own winning more than losing. I was playing a 8d s17 doa das no surrender game with 80% pen. I do pretty good overall on heads up play on lower limit tables and wanted to take the plunge. I was spreading 1-8 with a ramp of 4 which is grossly underspreaded but with a 1500 dollars bankroll the ror is pretty high. I did get my head handed to me after two hours of play and lost the entire bank due to a run of bad hands in the end but I learned a valuable lesson. blackchipjim

Was the lesson worth 1500 bucks? How long have you been playing this game? If you're are a low stakes bettor thats because thats what you can afford to play. No shame in that, but the shame comes when you go against what you're supposed to know to just get the "thrill" of laying out bigger money. Doing crap like that is what makes most wannabees neverwas'. So really is this a lesson learned, because you damn sure should have expected what would happen before you did it. Now you're just $1500 lighter than you were and that much farther away from moving up to bigger play legitimately. Keep it up soon you'll be following the flow of the cards, losing money, but claiming to have learned a lesson. Here's a free tip dude, if you already know its wrong you don't need no stinkin lesson.

A 1-8 spread is plenty for a game like that as long as you are Wonging out of bad counts. If you are backcounting it's even better.

What you did wasn't so terrible as long as you realize the session RoR is enormous. If you're willing to take the chance of having to go home early, and you can replace the $1500 soon, go for it. There will be sessions when you walk out with $4K-$5K too. That kind of game is not for me though, because I don't like wasting the long trips to the casinos and having to cut a session short (and it has happened to me on $25 games with playing stakes much larger than $1500) really pisses me off.

lessons learned

Hey Maz this is a game not a religion. I've been playing long enough to know better. Are you telling me you go into the casino and take this game as strict business venture and nothing more. Playing at a higher limit game than you afford is a thrill. If you come out a winner you beat the odds on ror and nothing more if you lose your arse like I did the ror won. I can make that money up by playing correctly at the correct level. Alot of new players that frequent this site don't know better and have an unrealistic view of counting and the expectation of making tons of money is pretty rampant among them. If they see stories of people taking the plunge and losing instead of stupid characters in movies making it big, that sir is the real lesson learned. blackchipjim

100% yes. this is a business venture. like others have quoted in the past, i get my kicks outside a casino. at a blackjack table, it is war. no room for thrills. no room for deviating from a well prepared battle plan of attack.

also, agree here with AM. depending on how you played, it might not have been so bad if you were wonging out of bad shoes at say -1, maaaybe -2. would be pretty hard to wong into a game and play heads up at the same time :joker::joker:. but you do take a large trip ROR with such a small session BR of 1500.

Uh oh.

I don't get a thrill out of risking lots of money, I dread it.

I DO get a thrill out of beating casinos... but if I could do it with virtually zero risk, that would be better.

In general, I strongly recommend increasing your betting only when your BR really supports it.

If this was your intention, then you are one in a million <3 I wouldn't take the risk of losing my BR to teach lessons to people that I don't know/care about. Maybe except for JJ.

Maz and rukus

are RIGHT on:grin:

Now all the money you may have won at the lower stakes you should have been playing is gone in a blink... at a game you had no business playing.

Rethink-retool-rearm, and get right;)

Also listen to MAZ, he really knows his stuff.

stories

Ok how many stories of counters on this site tell of betting on the big side and cleaning up. My intention in even mentioning my loss way to reinforce strict playing guidelines. Considering my bankroll the game I played would have been justified if I had a br of 50k agreeed. I don't nor would I consider doing it again until I reach that br requierment. blackchipjim

Thanks

It is a good reminder to see the negative side. Reminds us newbies that we won't be entering a casino with our beginning BR and walking out the next morning high rolling millionaires with comped rooms for life.

This was a stupid lesson that was not necessary: Grossly overbetting and under spreading at the same time.
What exactly was the lesson? Don't gamble when you are on tilt? zg

Let me just say that it is not easy.

Getting my masters was easier.

Daytrading is easier.
