My good luck in Primm- Food for thought

Last month I found myself in Primm, NV (or Jean or whatever it is) and I won $50 on a slot machine. I decided to take my winnings and go play Blackjack, a game I've never played before in my life. I knew nothing at the time about counting, betting strategies, or basic strategy. I played $5 hands figuring it out as I was going along making many stupid moves much to the consternation of the other players.

After I was playing for about 50 minutes I found that I was up by $100. I never once went below the $50 I started with. I made flat bets the whole time except for once in a while I would randomly make a $10 or $15 bet. I walked away from the table, but returned a few times that night and the next morning. I went home later that day with $600. And remember this is with NOT AT ALL knowing even basic strategy and making some stupid moves like hitting on a 16 when the dealer was showing a 6.

Since then I've become obsessed with reading about and playing BJ on my CPU. I now realize I had no idea what the hell I was doing when I played at Primm Valley. I've been using a basic Blackjack trainer to learn basic strategy, and trying my hand at betting systems on it. I fully expect the next time I go with all my newfound knowledge and skills to LOSE that $600 and maybe more!

I guess this story was just to point out that all these betting strategy success stories could well have come from just luck, because that was ALL that won me $600 in Primm.

the title "food for thought" is very misleading.

I don't get what the point of the story is...are you acknowledging the futility of betting systems? are you aware of the differences between worthless systems vs. betting strategies that are derived from positive counts?

I thought he made his point quite clearly right here:

He illustrates that even the worst player can still win due to blind luck. Then he speculates that anyone who’s been winning with a progression system is also the beneficiary of blind luck. Good post, IMO.

running on luck

I love to hear stories like that it makes me laugh. I have seen it time and time again where nor ryhme nor reason is present and they are winning tons of dinaros. Equally I have seen the effect when your luck runs out but you don't stop and it ain't pretty. Your're up a couple hundred or a couple thousand then wham! the piano falls on you and you don't even know it. I'm amazed how some people devise a plan to get that luck back next trip thinking they can.

I liked that story. I especially like how you said that even though next time you're going with your new knowledge of the game you don't expect to win another $600. That modesty is quite nice to hear.

Personally I think it's highly commendable that he quickly recognized that he didn't win on anything other than luck, and yet even though he won money, he realized how much his game has to improve. In my opinion, most people who would go to play blackjack, flat bet $5, then win $600, would get cocky and think they can play the game well, and hence never even take the time to stumble across this site.

Keep us updated, and be careful not to say which casinos you play at.

This is exactly right. And it IS speculation. I'm fascinated by everyone's stories here. When I got home I told a friend of mine of my winnings and he commented "my advice to you is to enjoy your $600- don't go back and play again because you'll lose it and more". That comment is what send me looking for information and made me stumble across this forum.

For a person like me driving away with $600 is a heady experience. Reading sites like this and playing Blackjack trainers on my computer have brought me down to earth. While I'm excited to go play again, I need to heed my friend's advice and expect to lose the $600- and many people's stories here back that up.
