5 injured in Vegas casino shooting

By KEN RITTER, Associated Press Writer

A "distressed" gunman on a balcony at the New York-New York casino opened fire on gamblers below early Friday, wounding four people before he was tackled by off-duty military reservists. A fifth person was hurt in a crush of people fleeing the casino.

The gunfire, which erupted around 12:45 a.m., touched off a human stampede as tourists and gamblers tried to get out of the line of bullets. As they ran from the building, they jumped over slot machines and knocked over chairs.

"It was crazy, pandemonium," said Jade Jacobson, 28, a tourist from Deland, Fla., whose cousin, a dance teacher from Pennsylvania, was wounded in the leg. She added: "All I was thinking was that I could die right now."

Steven Zegrean, 51, of Las Vegas, was arrested and was expected to face felony charges including attempted murder, battery with a deadly weapon and discharging a firearm in an occupied structure, Las Vegas police Capt. James Dillon said.

You left out the part about the casino staying open and guests be assured that it's business like usual.

I wonder how many chips the casino lost in the inevitable Ocean's 11-esque orgy of traygrabbing?

Heck, if you could find someone willing to go to jail for you, I bet you could make a lot of money off this. Give him a gun with some blanks, tell him to go nuts, and have plenty of "hands" on hand.

The thing that surprised me about this article is that the slot machines cleared out. Even primal biological urges like Food and Bathroom don't clear out those things.

Never had great luck at NYNY...

But has anyone noticed a wierd trend here? Wasn't there a shooting at the airport not too long ago, and now inside the actual casino? I don't know which will keep people away from tables more - 5:6 payouts, CSM machines, or hot lead flying around the place.

I wonder how long before we see metal detectors?

Last time I was at the Stratosphere, I was involved in a little fracas with a really drunk unruly dude who was being a physical jerk to the waitresses and his dealers. Also at Caesars, the last time I was there I saw two people tossed for what I would describe as fairly anti-social behavior bordering on violence.

Hopefully this is a random thing and I am seeing patterns that really aren't there.

There's enough corpses buried in the Nevada desert to prove Las Vegas has always been a town with violent underpinnings, but generally not for the patrons. In the 90s they tried to make the place more like an adult disneyworld, even with some "family friendly" areas. (Remember the amusement park behind MGM?) I have also read recently that Vegas is now moving toward more of an "adults only" atmosphere...

Hopefully they can do all of this while maintaining the safety and security of their guests.
