ZG Interview page-18:
What are some of the ploys you use to induce
the dealers to give you better penetration?
One trick I use is borrowed from Ian Anderson’s Burning the
Tables in Las Vegas: In double deck games I tell the dealer
that “today is my brother’s 29th birthday, so please place the
shuffle card 29 cards from the bottom”. In shoe games, “my
brother” is 46, so I ask that the card be placed 46cards from
the bottom, “for luck,” I add. I place a toke bet out as I
insert the cut card and demonstrate the penetration I desire,
and proclaim, “Let’s make some money.” If the dealer balks, I
add conspiratorially, “Just get as close as you can.”

i like the part where you conspiratorially add, “Just get as close as you can.”
lol, that strikes me as classic Zen. sort of telling him what to do but being such a nice guy and that the two of you get along so well you graciously leave it up to him. :cat:

if you are playing pitch games, stick with ZGs suggestions. superstitous dealers i have found are quick to empathize with a superstitious player like the type Ian/ZG portray in their suggestion.

if you play shoes, in my experience, i have found it better to save your toke money or sweet talking and just take an extra 5 minutes to scout for dealers who consistently cut off an "acceptable" amount of cards. again, in my experience, no amount of toking, joking, or smoking will convince a shoe deal to move the cut card much beyond what he/she normally cuts off (maybe others disagree or have a different experience, in which case maybe i should tip bigger or work on my sweet talking more ;)).

my two cents -

I usually make some kinda comment as they are about to insert the cut card like "ok lets make this shoe a good/better one" idk if it actually has any effect other than a shot in the dark, but a shot in the dark is better than no shot at all.

The idea is, if they have knowledge that putting the cut back farther makes the game more vulnerable, they might just do it for you out of sympathy since you were losing your pants before, at least to give you a chance, even if they know that the average player will have no ability to take action on it, in their minds, they are helping you out and it helps clear their concience? eh?
if they dont have knowledge of changing the place of the cut card and its effect on the game, they will think nothign of it and it will not sway their decision.

An idea that came from a dealer

Many years ago I had a couple of shoes with a dealer where I did all my winning near the end of the shoe. Since they were both positive shoes the results were decent since my bets at the end were bigger.
I commented that perhaps I will sit out the first 3-4 decks and only play the last couple but that might be hard to do since we were playing heads up.

The dealer responded by saying that he will cut it thin so the end of the shoe would last longer. Unfortunately, that shoe turned negative and I left well before the end of it but with a little twisting, after a good run at the end of a shoe and a comment about how I wished that the end would last longer, I do get a better cut at times.

What about expressing good-natured bewilderment at why they are shuffling all the freaking time? For example, when they give 50% pen on a DD game? That is stupid since they are losing money shuffling. The pit is too lazy to give a good game but protect it from getting abused.

I've used this gambit, whining about how "we're spending all this time watching you shuffle, you ought to put the cut card lower down so we can spend more time playing." It generally gets another 10-15 cards cut off, though occasionally the dealer honestly admits "this is how the boss tells me to do it."

As I rub my lucky yellow wrist band, I ask the dealer that "if she can match my cut, the cards will be aligned !" And, to validate, I tell her my lucky number is 59..."why 59 ?"Because I scored that many points in ahigh school game once, and it has always stuck with me ! She was young, and a bit naive. I am careful who I try it with...
