Playing with friends

Hello all!

I've been reading the forums for a long time, probably about a year and a half, and have finally decided to post some of my questions. To tell the truth, I have been sort of afraid due to some of the responses that I have seen to new posters. ;)

First off, I will give you a little about my experience and why I started reading the forums and learning. I've been a poker player for may years, but about two years ago (and please actually read this, I know that it sounds terrible and there has been quite a few discussions on this fact) my friend and I watched 21.:eek::eek: He was a common ploppy for about two years and I had never played BJ, but after seeing the movie we decided to do some research into counting. We started with Blackjack Attack and Million Dollar Blackjack along with perusing the forums (mainly this one). After a couple weeks of trying to find a place to start we decided to learn KO. We practiced for a few months and absorbed all the information we could (i.e. index plays, playing conditions, heat consideration etc).

During our research and learning period we realized that we will probably never make a living off counting cards due to preferring the other ("safer and more lucrative") investment opportunities available, but that was fine. Our goal was to learn enough to be able to play at an advantage instead of a disadvantage. He enjoys playing the game and not expecting to lose money (long term, we already know variance sucks), and I enjoy the feeling of knowing I am beating someone at their own game (also one of the reasons why I love poker... I am a highly competitive person).

Now, to my question. I typically only play casually. It used to be a couple times a month, lately it is about once a month, all for low stakes. The last couple times I have been to the local stores I have traveled up there with a couple friends of mine. The places around here are small, and more than once our group of 5 or so is the majority of the players at the tables. One of them bets erratically, occasionally bumping up against the table max, the others are all for lower stakes. The dealers and pit always love us because we are that happy group of people who just like to have fun and aren't all serious. My group all know I count, but don't follow by bets but will increase their bets maybe 1-2 or 3 if I have a max out, but never anything obvious. In smaller stores, will this just draw unneeded attention to us? Will the pit be less likely to back us/me off since they will lose, in some cases, 100% of the players at the tables? I have not seen anything so far that suggests they have any sort of problem with our play, but I am still very new to this and would like to avoid any problems.

I was also wondering about back counting and wonging. Since I play at these sparsely crowded places, I usually feel awkward back counting since I am just standing there doing nothing (I will "text" or something on my phone or talk to a friend if there is someone with me) and you get a lot of "Would you like to sit down and play?" "You should come help change the flow of cards" (stupid ploppies). Any suggestion on this? I'm ok with wonging now, beer makes me "need to pee" a lot and even tho I quit smoking I bring a pack so I can go to the balcony and stand there with a lit cigarette when needed.

I would like to thank everyone (well, almost everyone ) for all the posts on this site that have already taught me so much and I look forward to someday being able to contribute!

Playing with a friend next to you who is also counting is not a good idea, but if you have a full table of players who are all betting wildly and not coordinated I think that would work!

I don't Freaking believe this! It isn't new poster(s). It's poster! Singular. Bombarding both message boards. Ken confirms that all these new posters, many with similar style names and siimilar style posts are from different IP addresses and different locations, So I don't know how you are pulling that off, but I don't have a freaking doubt in my mind its the same person and not only that, but this isn't the first time you have done this trick. If I was a betting man, I would go all in on this one. :p

i have this hypothesis that the Online poker crowd will gravitate toward AP blackjack now that the online poker sites are shut down. maybe i'm right?

i know correlation does not imply causality, but... :joker:

pit pays designated driver off

My wife and I were visiting her family in Tennessee. Before long we've done all the touristy things and decided to load up the SUV with as many relatives as we could fit and go to Tunica for some gaming. The casino was totally dead. Our dirty dozen was a significant part of the people not playing slots. Everyone was drinking pretty heavily(not to support any stereotypes but they are irish-americans) except my wife who was the designated driver.

She was playing $3 a hand blackjack with some of the clan and a local. It is very unusual for her to play because losing just 1 hand really upsets her but today she joined in with her relatives. The first hand she loses I am watching to see how she reacts only to see her get paid for her losing hand. The local gets a partial syllable out of his mouth before he realized he shouldnt point out the dealers mistake. I guess he realized dealer mistakes help to even the playing field.

The next time she loses the dealer makes another "mistake" and pays her off. The local was about to explode but just moves to a different table rather than say anything. Now my wife is terrible at blackjack and needs my advice constantly but not this day. The pit kept allowing the dealer to pay her improperly enough of the time to make sure she stayed a winner and didnt want to leave with most of their drunk customers who were losing way more than she was winning.

Hello and welcome! I too am new and can relate with some of your motives of play although the movie was not the initiating event.

If I ran the place I would let you play even if I found out you counted as long as your friends made me more money on bets and food/drink, assuming that I don't get your friends' business unless you join them. Simple money in vs. money out. Now that's just me and the pit may not be thinking that way.

I once played with a friend who was a martingaler. Bets changed all the time and frequently bounced between minimum bet and black chip territory. We got quite a bit of heat at first. My heat was by association. His play was evaluated and mine was of no threat so they eventually let us play. In fact they opened up a table just for us so we could play faster! I'm sure that if I were to play with him regularly and if I were to begin playing with an advantage that it would take them quite a while to realize what's going on having been labelled as a martingaler. That is until someone new works at surveillance and they decide to re-evaluate both of us.

If I were in your group and all I knew were BS, I would have a hard time playing a losing game knowing full well that if I bet like you I would have a good shot at winning.

That should tell you all you need to know about martingales. The casino knows sooner or later you will lose big. So as long as they can keep you betting as fast as possible it was likely to happen in their place they had no problem with it.

You should be cautious about any system where the casinos big defense is to make conditions for you to play as fast as possible rather than restrict you or back you off.

KJ: Definitely different people, though I have heard about some software or a service that you can reroute your IP through. Seems useful for those sites that only allow you to stream something like a movie a day from a specific IP.

Thank you for the replies. The people I play with understand that following my bets would be a bad idea in general, and they really just want to play for low stakes and have fun. They would be playing flat betting anyway so they don't mind. They even get a couple larger bets on high counts in there when we are getting ready to leave.

I do have one particular friend that loves to bet table max. He is ploppy to the core, but has come in handy when the PC is around. There have been times where his 'goading' me to bet more has allowed me to raise my bets without any worry. He has even convinced the staff to 'egg me on' in betting higher :D

I don't go with anyone when my purpose is to play blackjack. Reason being that I might stay for hours and my friend may run out of money and be bored, and I won't want to leave. When I'm playing, I'm playing, not socializing.
