Question on the asm's

I had to ask a question only to satisfy my own curiosity on the infernal machines. My experience with counting against them is varied. I find that a shoe that starts off high may stay that way almost 1/2 way through the shoe. Then a shoe that is basically neutral may stay that way the whole shoe except the last portion starts to rise to a slight advantage. I don't have alot of experience against the machines to really come to a any hard evidence as far as overall results. I know that asms are playable but on general opinion how is other players results against them. blackchipjim

Implying that your experience against hand shuffling is not? :joker:

I have no problem with ASMs. There are good shoes, and there are bad shoes.

I seriously doubt that an ASM can tell one card from another while it’s shuffling, let alone put them in any kind of order. Even if it did put them in order, wouldn’t that be defeated by the cut? Never mind that if they were put in order, someone would figure out a way to take huge advantage of it.

I don't play much and when I play I don't bet much (low bankroll.) In the '90s I had 4 consecutive winning trips to Vegas. I used a strategy of play all versus single or double deck. This was before 6/5 so all blackjacks paid 3/2. Because of my low spread I had no concerns about heat and had no problems with that and did a lot of just camping out on tables for hours and hours. On one of the trips I wasn't doing too well when I came across an ASM dealt game at Sam's Town. While one deck was being played, another was being shuffled so the pace of the game was very fast. I have no trouble keeping count no matter how fast the game can be, especially with a level one count. Anyway I played this game for 2 days and the cards were going my way and it made my trip.

Another place that does this for single deck is the El Cortez. I played the ASMs there in late 2000. This was a losing trip, although not too bad. I didn't make any trips to Vegas after that until 16 months ago and the El Cortez still had single deck ASMs. On this trip I changed my strategy. I still played only versus single and double deck but it wasn't play all and I did a lot of table/casino hopping. The main purpose of this trip wasn't to play blackjack and I didn't play much but ended with up a small winner.

Anyway I like the ASMs. They seem to do a good job of shuffling, which is all that can be hoped for.

I think (Their I go again) most people play a typical 6 deck with a ASM. Are you saying you only play hand shuffled games ?

ASMs are fine where you can get good pene. You simply cannot ST against most of them because you cannot see the shuffle technique. However, many that cannot be ST'd can still track Aces. Your personal experience with ASMs is likely just anamolous. zg

I've probably played more ASM than hand shuffled.

They "feel" about the same, no real difference for a non shuffle tracking person like myself.

Should a distiction be made between the ASM which shuffle one deck below while one's in play, with the dealer rotating decks, and the ASM which simply rifles the two stacks of cards together after they've been manually divided and loaded by the dealer?

The latter sure seem ST-able to me, although I've no expertise backing up this perception. The dealer barely even rearranges a few blocks of cards before splitting the stack in two and loading one to each side.

Am I on the right track?

I seem to get more hand shuffled games at the places I frequent since I play more east coast. With the advent of new casinos popping up and asms at the tables that's changing. It was a just a question since I know vegas has alot of them and alot of the guys on site play there. I knew the st was a waste of time because I did visit the patent site and researched the machines that do the shuffling. I joke that the machine shuffles the stupid plays out of the shoe after a full table of idiots. blackchipjim
