I will be using the Hi-Lo count when i go to the casino. How do i know if I have the right count?? Say I sit down and at a new 6d shoe with 1.5 decks cut out. Is there an average count at the end of the shoe?? Say I count through 5 shoes and end up at a RC of -6, -3, -8, 2, and 0....would this be typical or not....i guess what i'm getting at is there any way for me to know if i'm keeping a good count or if i'm totally screwing up??? thanks for any help.

Person, great question! I don't think you want to test your ability to keep count using HI-LO in a casino. Unfortunately there is no way to know if your count is correct or not if your playing alone. If you have a skilled counter with you that can mentor you then, you will be better off. If you take a little more time with practice, your results will be much better obviously.

My favorite way of practicing or to time myself is to take a single deck, burn a card then flip the cards face up in my palm and thumb through them. You should be able to say the burn card is 2-6 7-9 or 10-Ace. Do not worry to much about speed, you want to be accurate.

If you are loosing count while at a table, you should really rethink going to play. But its all good, we all did it and paid for it. If you are not loosing count, then test yourself at home or in your room. At the same time, try to incorporate a True Count Conversion at 1 deck increments and work your way to 1/4 deck. Take your time.

Good luck..

Short of getting them to show you all the remaining cards left in the shoe, which they're not about to do, I don't know how you could check your counting at the casino.

The good news is, with just a little more practice at home, and a little more experience at the casino, you'll become confident enough in your ability so that you won't worry about it anymore. Or at least you'd better! :)

You can buy a blackjack shoe from a number of sources. Finding decks of cards to fill them with should not be a problem.

I have two shoes: One 6 deck and the other 2 decks.. since those are the games I am most frequently playing. I can also grab another deck and do my own "pitch" game to practice, but since I rarely find a single deck anymore I think it's better exercise with 2 or 6 decks.

Keep the running count to the cut card, then pull the rest of the pack out. Count the remaining cards. If you don't end up with 0 then you're off.
