Self discipline rewards

In a recent chat, these 4 told me they are non-smokers: Creeping Panther, Bojack, BJCount and Pro21. Self-discipline is one primary necessity for anyone who wants to be an Advantage Player. My conclusion: these guys had enough strong self-discipline to overcome or turn away from an addiction that is a known form of slow suicide... (habitual inhaling of toxic fumes.) For any smokers here who want to quit, you could see your intent to quit as a major factor in your strengthening of self-discipline. You might ask, what is it I want, and how bad do I want it?

Giving up smoking is the easiest thing in the world. I know because I've done it thousands of times. -Mark Twain

I quit smoking about three years ago. Did it cold turkey, but I do allow myself an occasional smoke, once every six weeks or so. My last trip to Vegas, I actually had three in a week, and was a bit concerned. Haven't had one since June 9th.

To a health food nut, not only smoking cigarettes but eating pasta is a form of suicide, and they might imagine me sitting over a plate of rigatoni with my big fat belly to be too undisciplined to be an AP too. They are wrong. Eating that pasta gives me more enjoyment in life than being a health food nut would, and if that means I only live to be 100 instead of 101 I'll take it.

It's a question of what you enjoy. Sure, cigarettes are unhealthy and it's an addiction but it's a very enjoyable addiction, for some. The smell disgusts me, just like sushi disgusts some others, so I'll never smoke and I'll never force anyone to eat sushi. Same can be said for alcohol, sex in various modes, and even the act of sitting at a blackjack table, as not exercising and exposing ourselves to occasional destructive people does statistically shorten our lifespans. There's no question that blackjack, especially the way I play it (slugging whiskey, wolfing down a meal at the buffet and barking at the moon as I play) is not as healthy as going out and jogging on the beach but it'll do.

Now that casinos are working on the quality of the air in their environments, they may just be very healthy places to vacation at. When was the last time a casino patron was killed in a casino? Or drowned in a hotel pool? Most casinos have excellant first responders on hand. I can't think of a better non-hospital location to have a heart attack in.

Advantages of smoking at the table

Besides all the obvious negatives, there are the following benefits from smoking at the BJ table:

1) Breaks the stereotype of the typical counter.
2) Clears away excess players at a good game, especially a nice stinky cigar.
3) Provides an excellent as well as subtle means of signaling a team mate.
4) Adds one more credible excuse to Wong out.

Airport. They've got some pretty good people there too, plus for obvious reasons they can airlift me out if they have to.

I'd say an upscale casino resort can be a healthy place, but not the way an AP uses it. I never have time to go to the pool or health club, just a long grind at the tables.

I agree 100%. I quit smoking months ago in the rest of my life, but still do it at casinos. If someone takes a seat next to me at high counts, I light up and let plenty of smoke get in their face.

I try not to smoke much otherwise, especially if it's a dealer I don't mind. The dealers that make a big production of my smoking, well, that just makes me want to do it more. Not to sound cold, but they took the job knowing there's smoke involved.

I make a big point out of stepping away from the table to smoke. I get brownie points from the dealer for it, and it gives me a ready made excuse to leave the table when the count tanks. since i no longer smoke, the act is a bit more difficult to pull off, but it's still worth it.

For what it's worth, I know every bouncer took his job knowing he'd have to deal with a-holes. Still doesn't mean I should be one.

I wish cigars were still allowed in my favorite casino, that actually cleared out a table :cool2:.

I've never smoked cigarettes, just being at a casino is enough smoking for me. I do, however, occasionally smoke hookah for those who know what that is.

Just think of how much bigger your BR would be if you didn't smoke though.

Huh. I wonder what would happen if you tried to smoke a hookah in a casino?

I've seen security chimp out on people chewing tobacco. Apparently chew of any kind is banned in casinos, because it makes a mess and can be used to mark the cards.

One form of tobacco I'd like to try is nasal snuff, but modern people are so unfamiliar with it someone would probably think it's heroin and I'll get in trouble.

If you think that's a good idea, you ought to try anal snuff. Guaranteed to clear out an entire pit.

 Oh man that's great! Tobacco suppositories do exist. I suppose that's one way to avoid smokers' breath.

It would cause much more of a stir in a hand-held game than in pitch.

Joe Pesce, to a BJ dealer in "Casino": "Take this stiff, and shove it up your ass."

(It wasn't really accurate. His initial hand was the stiff. He was telling the dealer to shove the bust card he got dealt up his ass.)
