Single Deck 21

Hello forum,

Greetings. I have been a casino dealer for a year and have been practicing hi-lo for the past few months to the point that I can do it whilst dealing... and so am ready for the big first trip out to play on the other side of the table.

I want to start of slow and steady... I view this as an apprenticeship.

My question is.... on Single 21 as a lone player I get dealt 5 hands max - which means I only get dealt about 50% of the deck. Is it really worth counting on this game for other than some live practice?

Second question is.... on a six shoe game.. penetration approx. 70% (depending on dealer;) - at what point in the count is it worth betting big. The highest I seem to see is about +17 with a deck to go.

Are there any online guidelines/references for this??

Many thanks guys,

Mich.

The single deck game is Rule of 6. Take the number 6, subtract the number of players (one) and you get the number of rounds (five).

Ro6 is fine. Ro5 is bad. Ro7 is great.

In Ro6, if you play two spots, you'll get four rounds, but manage to get effectively better penetration than playing one spot.

That's a very playable game. I live in the Midwest, and in many places there's nothing but 8 deckers. I'd kill for a single deck game with poor pen at a local joint.

Need I worry whether our new dealer friend knows that 6/5 ain't no good,
except high-spreads or frontloading. zg

Oh yeah, I didn't even think of that. Assumed it was 3-2...

Never having played in LV (or anywhere else with a single deck game), do they post Ro6, etc. on the table, or is it something you determine by watching the game?

Yeah - it's 3-2. I would rather stick pins in my eyes than play 6 -5. :joker:

just like pen. you figure it out yourself.

read Wong's Professional Blackjack for one and a bit more rigorous is Schlesinger's Blackjack Attack.
also read the Game Master's School lessons. these are great.

This from my other post... but will post here as it relates to Single Deck and may help others in the future.

Thanks Mr Frog and all else.. much appreciated. Schlesinger's notes rock. But again I am confused about single deck.... marketed as 'Single 21' around here (West Coast). Schlesinger states that single deck is way more preferable to play.. yet that any cut that has 50% penetration or less means counting is worthless.

Single 21 here is, Dealer Hits Soft 17, Double and Split ant any time, DD after splitting allowed, Surrender anytime, BJ pays 3-2, Table Min $10, Max $200. Here if I am a single player I will get 5 rounds... barely 50% of cards in the dealers hand.

Can anyone help clear up my confusion?

Pen of 50% or less is NOT worthless. It's just not a very good single deck game. EVERYTHING EVERYTHING EVERYTHING depends on the spread you can get away with. Most 6 deck games, you have to spread 1-15 to get a good edge. A crappy single deck that you can get away with 1-8 at would be a gold mine. The devil is in the details...

The rules as stated above are excellent. Even with H17, the DAS and LS offset that negative. The way to cream this game is to go to two hands and get four rounds (by yourself). The DAS factor in SD, besides giving you .14% also adds another sumbliminal advantage. A 1:4 spread x 2 will work quite effectively.

Yes. You are not talking about single deck blackjack, this game is Single 21, a BJ derivative where naturals only pay 3:2 if they are of the same suit. The game is playable with decent pen, you just need some special strategies similar to those needed for Super Fun 21. Stay away from it.

That's a new one on me. Is that the same as Super Fun 21? Which begs the next question. How many current varieties of so called SD blackjack are running around these days?

Single 21 is all suited black jacks (not just diamonds) pays 3-2.. all non suited jackpots pay even money. So is it worth playing??

Not really. Unless you can spread 1-15 or spot the dealer's hole card.
