The Burn Card

1. Is asking to see the Burn Card a tip-off to the dealer that you might be counting?

2. Is there any real advantage to knowing what the Burn Card was?

Seeing the burn card will increase your penetration by 1 card, that is the only advantage to seeing it. It's not worth the possible heat to get 1 card extra penetration in shoe games. In one deck however, 1 card penetration is more significant.

As Scott said, the cut card doesn't make much difference unless it is a SD game. Being able to see the bottom card before the cut can be much more profitable. Knowing the location of a hot slug or sequenced ace is even more profitable.

My friend always asks to see the burn card. Admittedly, it was at a CSM machine, so I double they're looking for card counters.

If you want to avoid heat, use asking about the card as a way of covering your play. Play it off like a superstition thing, or like you were playing a side bet. "Dude, I bet that card is a.... hrm... I think a seven. Is it?" Or "My friend said that cards unseen were bad luck, which is why they flip over the dealer's hole card even if everyone busts."

Sometimes I'll ask to see what the next card out of the shoe would have been after the very last play of the shuffle, just out of curiosity.

I bet I could parlay that into asking what the burn card is with the first card of the new shoe...

Sure. It works well when you are playing at first base. Also, when playing at first base you can sometimes see the card right at the very end of the shoe, and you can count that one too.
