I was once told "nothing as big or bigger that the cards" and another time "nothing at all" on the table, but I could hold any size in my hands. I had a card, but wasn't writing anything. I actually saw a player doing that at one local shop, and he was asked to remove it from the table, because they had a "drinks and cigarrettes only" policy.
