this was different

I recently was at Ohkay Owingeh casino by Espanola, NM and on their DD game they burned two cards after the shuffle, and on their 6D shoe game they burned 6 cards. Obviously this was due to the number of decks, but I'd never seen this before anywhere. I was wondering if anyone's come across this at any other casino.

Burn

If it makes the cowards feel better, so be it.

The other question is what comes after they burn??

Hell, I play at places that show the burn card,,,but they have some ballz.

Years ago I saw a Vegas casino that did the "baccarat burn" at the BJ tables. They would shuffle, expose the top card and burn that number of cards. As CP says, if it makes them feel better then so be it.

No---because that increases the amount of unseen cards.

From an AP perspective, more burn cards = lower penetration (basically, these cards might as well be moved to the back of the shoe behind the cut card). Therefore, AP's dislike card burning.

From a Basic Strategy perspective, more burn cards = more frequent shuffles (ceteris paribus), which means slower rate of game play, which means more overall time spent at tables and more comped drinks! Therefore, BS players should join in the chorus of "Burn, Baby, Burn."

At Aria, Bellagio, MGM Grand and Monte Carlo, the policy was simply to burn one card at the start of a new shoe, with no one seeing the burn card. I never encountered more burning or the "Baccarat Burn."

By maybe 4-5 cards on average. So you lose about 1.4% penetration. I can think of a few ways to counteract that.

The Longhorn and Bighorn do this. But they also offer double on three cards, and surrender so I think the tradeoff works in the players favor.

Big time.

If they're willing to show the burn cards (which according to Hoyle, is the definition of "burning cards") I'll be happy to let them burn as many as they wish.

perhaps I should have said "buried" instead of "burned" because they didn't show them. (Be nice if they did!)

I've seen this only in South America (Colombia to be exact).
Never in the U.S. but I have not been to many casinos either.
