Tournaments

Heading to Vegas next week, does anyone have any details of low roller tournaments?

Be there for about 10 days, love blackjack, getting there with counting but don't have a bankroll to play seriously for this vacation. Recently bought the UBT Season 1 on DVD and it looks like good fun (well done Ken on whipping the bad boy of blackjack in one of the final tables!). Looks like another way to keep the blackjack bug going and it just seems a great laugh.

I'll be spending a lot of time in poker rooms as well, but a couple of afternoons playing blackjack tournaments will get me out of there.

Any thoughts welcome.

Cheers Ken,

I've been lurking about here a while, this is easily the best blackjack forum about in my opinion.

Obviously you have a rep of being a tourney player, are tourneys very big in US? I've only ever heard of 1 in all the years at my local casinos in UK. Mildly surprised that there is not a tournament forum on here, perhaps you don't want too many of your tips given away lol!

Def think that tourney blackjack could steal some of the poker thunder. However, I notice that ClubUBT seems more like a poker site rather than blackjack now. Seems a shame as I think think there could be a market for it (although their accountants must say different!)

I run both sites: BlackjackInfo.com and BlackjackTournaments.com
The tournament discussions are therefore steered over there.

Tournaments have been quite rare in the UK, but that is changing recently. Here is a thread about a recent and ongoing event in London:

In the US, unfortunately tournaments are on the decline as well. UBT has had a lot of issues, and they have transformed into a mostly poker site as you noticed.

If you are interested in the UBT blackjack tournament format though, you could participate in a weekly event at Sunset Station in Henderson Nevada. It's a long cab fare from the Vegas strip, but if you have a car it's quite manageable. That event is held every Thursday starting at 6 pm.

I was wondering myself about tournaments for the normal low roller. I asked in a number of casinos about tournaments when I was in Vegas a couple of months ago. I got mostly blank stares. There used to be a fair amount of tournaments for blackjack, slots, and even a few craps back in the late 80's/early 90's. Typically they ran 3-4 days mid-week and were a great bargain and a lot of fun. These were not for professionals per se and the payouts, while pretty good by amatuer standards, were certainly nowhere near what we see today for professional poker. Shame they've apparently mostly gone by the way.

I just registered for the other site last night. I only started checking out tournaments over the last few days. Didn't want to stumble across who won the champions table. Sure was a bummer of a time for the dealer to hit blackjack!

Did a bit of searching last night. Lifted from the website of the Cannery:

Mondays and Fridays at the Cannery, 10:00 a.m.
$15 entry fee

Your BJ tournament site mentions Longhorn casino, can't find a website for them but it's not too far off the strip so wouldn't be a hassle to check it out myself.

Found the following on the Sunset website:

Ultimate Blackjack Tournament
Thursday Night Blackjack is Back!

Every Thursday
$25 Buy In Fee
Registration will begin at 5pm. Tournament will begin at 6pm.

$2,000 Guaranteed First Place Prize.
Winners of each tournament will advance into one quarterly UBT Circuit Event.

Complete rules available in the Casino Pit Area in front of Club Madrid.

At least that's a couple worth checking out.

Those are a lot smaller than what I was thinking in the past. The buy-ins were a bit more serious, like $750 per person or $1200 for a couple. That got you a room, all food at any restaurant in the casino, a special "welcoming" dinner/cocktail party, and show tickets. Once you got established, say at Bally's, the room was usually a mini-suite or better. The payout structure guaranteed you'd walk away with at least $200 per person and top prices were around $15,000 with place money down to 10th place and sometimes deeper. Typically 400 to 500 people would sign up for these and it was pretty much a week long party.

Has anyone played in the Thursday freeroll at Wild Wild West? I'll be in town next week, and am already aware of the Sunset Station tourney, just not sure if driving to Henderson during rush hour is high on my priority list. Since I'll be at the Rock, driving to WWW is a lot easier. Thanks if you can recommend or dis the WWW tourney for me.
