I'd like to run poll to see how many aps here play video poker. For various reasons that are unimportant I'm curious to see how many of us play. You can state you reasons for playing but it's not nescessary.
With comps, mailers and cash back, VP can definitely be an advantage play, though the variance can try one's patience and bankroll. At some stores I visit, the decent BJ games are not always available, and VP can provide an alternative. As in the BJ world, however, the good VP opportunities are becoming harder and harder to find.
I think where you reside is a big factor here. If you live in Vegas and have hundreds of stores you can "hop" them with AP BJ. Many (like myself) live in areas with limited stores and have to use the BJ game very carefully to avoid being 86'd.
This is where video poker can be a viable alternative IF a decent game is offered. Let's say "Bonus Deuces" (99.73% version) is offered along with a good card cashback perk. If you have time to kill AND enjoy playing the game it would be a wise choice. Remember that 99.73% is with PERFECT PLAY so mistakes need to be avoided like the plague.
If you do this, you can log many, many hours of play with a very small profit and be building overall goodwill with the casino at the same time. That can get you what I call "worked comps" like free rooms, meals, show tickets, sporting event tickets, etc.
This game is quite volatile so a bankroll is needed for the bad swings. You'll have many stretches without either royals or quad ducks and rapid bankroll depletion is the result but you'll also have unbelievably good stretches, too.
One of my favorites is the 100.14% version of Loose Deuces which is even more volatile but a wild and fun ride!
Quarter games are a better choice than dollars simply because of tax implications. Dollar games mean W-2 forms for all royals and even 4 ducks (some games). Your edge is so small that you don't want to be taxed on it.
for now VP is part of my portfolio.
a small part for the most part and i want to keep it that way.
far as i see it, vp is like Billy & pieinthesky say. and it's as automonk and machinist describe it as well, where they address it in the thread about it's addictive nature.
That statement alone makes me wonder why Katweezal has not stepped into the mix to comment. Aussieland has one of the biggest problems with what they call "pokies". The addiction rate is suppose to be one of the greatess in the gaming world.
