what is the optimum spread?

what in everyone's opinion is the optimum spread for profit vs heat? is a 1-10 spread suspicious for drawing heat? just wanted to see everyone's input. i would love to do a 1-20 spread if i could, but i am too conscious of the possibility of drawing heat. i am afraid if my spread is too low, then i am wasting my high counts and could potentially be in the loss column over the long term. any experiences appreciated.

That's going to totally depend on the rules and number of decks in play. Can be as low as 1-4 or as high as 1-16 or more.

So we need more info.

how would that make a difference with drawing heat? i play all games single deck, double deck, 6-8 shoe games with a variety of rules of both H17 or S17, DAS and no DAS, and also re-splitting and no re-splitting aces. i figure if my play changes too much at any of these tables there would be increased heat win or lose because of the variation of play. i try to keep things as standard as possible as even ploppies have their own techniques or instincts which influences there pattern of play.

Because you asked for profit.... Play a 6D shoe spreading 1-4 and YOU LOSE. Play a SD spreading 1-16 and you will be shown the door in a hurry.

As much as you'd like it to, one size will not fit all.

The books will tell you to spread 1-4 for SD, 1-8 for DD, and 1-16 for 6d.

Personally, I don't follow that advice. I've spread 1-60 at some places. Just find a place that isn't watching.

u have a point. that makes sense... so between a 1-4 spread which guarantees loss in a 6D shoe vs 1-16 spread on single deck drawing too much heat. 1-10 falls in the middle. maybe this is best! lol... i've just noticed in shoe games not many spread 1-10 so i am reluctant to spread by that much. i've seen it in single deck once in a while and there definitely is attention drawn to the table. just wanted to know other's strategy of spread and experiences with heat at which spread.

Moo's advice is the standard answer found in most texts. I personally spread higher than that on DD and way higher on 6D, sometimes 1-80. Get to know your opponent and you'll have an idea what you can get away with. And then do it, or more.

thanks. i'll keep those tips in mind. just from my observation at several places where i play when the spread reaches 10X the original bet the dealer gives a signal to the pitboss. i've seen it on more than one occasion. some places don't, but some do. i guess i just have to be aware where i can spread higher.

If it's a multi-deck game I wouldn't think a 1-10 would be a problem unless the store is really sweaty.

BTW - there are several ways to get a 1-20 spread where the pit doesn't think you're doing it.

What kind of signal? You mean checks play call? That's nothing. If its something else I've never seen a dealer give a non-verbal signal to a pit boss, they're not even allowed to look back.

Now don't get it into your mind of spreading to 80 every chance you get. Observe your environment and be part of your environment.

Agreed.

On the other hand - ACE, if you can aggressively avoid -EV counts, a 1-5
6D spread is sufficient, but if you play all counts 1-10 is NOT enough. zg

I think I saw you spreading 1-80 a few weeks ago... :)
