whats the difference between early and late surrender?

While I was running the BS simulator on this site, I checked early surrender instead of late, this dropped the house advantage to .03% when late surender is .58%.

What is the difference between early and late surrender?
Just curious, as I have only ever seen LS at a casino, and that is at only 1 table.
