When do you take insurance?

Basically for a 6 deck game at what + count should I take insurance?

From what I can gather the basic chance is 16/52 of getting blackjack (as there are 16 ten cards in a 52 card deck).

So for every + count that is one less card in the deck. Insurance pays 2:1, so (52-x)/16 = 2+1, 52-x = 48, x = 4. So if the true count is better than +4 its ok to take insurance because you actually have the edge!

I only take insurance when my card is 17 or better.

And I always give up insurance when my card is between 12 and 17 because it will make me lose more money.

With Basic Strategy (non-counting) you should never take insurance. But since you mention a + count, I will jump to the collision..ugh conclusion...that you do count. With KO (Knock Out), using the recommended IRC (Initial Running Count) you should only take Insurance or Even Money when the count is +3 or greater. I would imagine that any counting system will list the Insurance Indices as the first deviation from Basic Strategy since it alone is the most profitable Indices.
