I'm playing at a casino with a great game. And all of a sudden this ploppy sits down next to me. He's betting black chips, on the main game and a side bet. And then he whips out a piece of paper and starts writing things down in chinese, as he's playing!

At first I thought he may have been doing something with the sidebet (main count was neutral) but then I figured out he was a ploppy. Anyways, the dealer calls the floor over and says "um, this guy is writing things down while he's playing. Do you want to make sure he isn't counting cards or something?"

The floor is like "no, he's cool". And that's when I realized this was the dumbest crew I'd ever seen, and I proceeded to play as optimally as I wanted until I was too tired to play any more.

Better than those joints that are so overprotective that they don't even allow their crews to exercise common sense.

I was just playing at a decent place on a slow night. 6 deck shoe. Manual shuffle, takes a few minutes. Leaning back in my chair, my phone buzzed in my pocket near the start of the shuffle. I pull it out to check the text, and the pit tells me to step away from the table. I said, "But, you're shuffling." They said it doesn't matter. What in the world did they think I was going to do?

Sounds to me like the dealer did exactly what he was supposed to do, by reporting it the floor. Also - sounds like the floorman looked over at the guy and recognized him as a regular; someone who had already been checked out and found to be no threat. A black chip player who's a known sucker is very valuable to a casino, and the casino will usually be very happy to put up with quirks and oddities.

Almost all cell phones nowadays have cameras. A properly filmed shuffle is one of the most lucrative cheating techniques possible.

I've heard that, but I think it may be more legend than reality. Cell phone cameras do not have the speed to capture fast motion in low light conditions, just not enough photons through that little pinhole. Your eyes can get much more data.

There are ways to use a cell phone to track a shuffle without using the camera.

AM is correct about cell phones. A REALLY good cell phone video will be recorded in 30fps, which are essentially progressive frames, as I don't believe cell phone videos perform any sort of interlacing. This means that there will be 30 frames of video recorded per second of NTSC video (well, 29.97 if you really want to know), which is not enough to get good shuffle info on any but the most incompetently-slow shuffles (and even then...). But that doesn't mean that casinos won't be ignorant enough to sweat the hell out of them!

Speaking of which, one dealer told me at turning stone that you aren't allowed to take the cut card and brush it along the deck before cutting anymore. Apparently according to him someone got caught with a cheating device in their hand and could somehow (I don't see how) decipher the best place to place the cut card. Sounds really far fetched, but hey, I don't know technological advances in these things because I really have no interest.

The other sensible reason could be that they're so nitty about going through extra cut cards due to wear and tear they wanted that practice stopped.

I have been stopped from brushing the cut card along the shoe on several occasions.

That is because it is possible to do that and catch a glimpse of an Ace or a Face and cut the shoe to that card by giving a subtle twist with the cut-card.

I have heard of this but I cannot independently verify it.

Consider it verified! It's not that hard to do if the dealer isn't careful.

Without brushing to find a card, if the dealer is holding the pack the right way, and you cut it the right way, you can see the miscellaneous card that you've cut to.
