Help me learn?

Hi there. My husband is a very big fan of Black Jack, and generally does very well when playing it. *I* however am not yet comfortable playing BJ anywhere but at home with my own chips. I joined her ein hopes to learn enough that I can start playing at the tables when we go to the casino, rather than spending my nights at the slot machines and roulette...

I would love to learn to count cards, though Im told I need to focus first on basic strategy. So far I have learned that I should NOT always assume that the hole card is a ten or face, and I have found charts that help to explain the best move to make depending on your hand, and the dealers hand. I am still a bit confused though. If anyone has links, or suggestions to easier learning of a basic strategy, I would be more than greatful for your help! Thank you in advance!!

Is your husband a counter or does he just play BS?

No, he's not a counter. But Im better at catching on to things than he is, so I figure if I can figure it all out, and learn it, I can teach it to him in a way he'll understand quickly. He learns better by hearing it and seeing it, rather than reading it in articles... He doesnt have the patience to sit and read it all... lol Plus if I can learn BS and counting, or even just BS, I can start playing too.

Basic strategy as you've stated is where to start, because even when you are counting the majority of your hands will be played using basic strategy.

Besides playing basic strategy well the other component of a successful game is knowing what blackjack games you should play, and what games you should stay away from, because even if you learn how to count and bet properly, some games are so bad that you will still end up a loser.

The best book in my opinion that covers all the necessary aspects of how to find and play a winning (or at least a break even) blackjack game is "Blackbelt in Blackjack," by Arnold Snyder. I've seen it at the local bookstores, Barnes and Noble and B. Dalton..

I'm currently reading "Blackbelt in Blackjack" and Im about 1/2 way through it. I read Stanford Wongs "Professional Blackjack" and it was good, but I'm liking Snyders book more. I highly recommend it as someone else just starting out.

Thank you! I found the BS trainer last night and played for a few hours before I went to bed, works well, and I actuall had quite a few hands that it DIDNT tell me I was wrong... But also had a few where I was...lol Its a good tool though, thats for sure! Very helpful

It helped me learn basic strategy. It has worksheets and practice drills. The later courses cover the hi-lo count. Since I was committed to KO I just used the first three.
