Is Honesty The Best Policy In Blackjack?

I will never tip a dealer after he makes a mistake in my favor, because I don't like jail and I don't think the dealer does either.
So, since his tip was already out in this case, are you saying you would be honest in this case and point out his mistake to avoid looking like colluding with dealer?

But after reading so many "one-way" replies, I feel obligated put my two cents in for those who might believe that if you lose the hand, it should cost you your bet.
I have to admit... me too. I'm sure many of you will think I am a stupid prude, but in the (paraphrased) words of Billy Joel, "It doesn't matter who you sleep with, You always wake up with yourself."

When I was 13, I stole a dollar from my dad's wallet. He looked at me later after I got busted with *that* look and said, "I have no use for any man who would lie to me or steal from me." I decided that day it seemed like a pretty good way to go about my business.

I have only had the opportunity to correct a dealer error twice, but each time I did, the look of respect and thanks from the dealer was worth more than any extra money I would have made. You can't buy self respect.

You can't impose morality either, so I want to make it CRYSTAL clear that this is simply the way I choose to conduct myself, and not what I expect of others.

I have no qualms in taking extra money from the greedy casino. I've taken extra money from the bank teller at least twice, also. I will however give back excess change at a store ("store" not meaning a casino here  )

Cashiers at a grocery store/target/etc aren't dealing in cash at the level a bank teller/cage cashier are. Mistakes happen.

But bank tellers, dealers, and cage cashiers regularly deal with large amounts of chips/money. If they are making mistakes, it will be found out sooner or later. They should be in a different line of work.

On a related note, I never use ATM's. I use bank tellers exclusively. First of all, the moral crusade, machines taking away jobs, blah blah blah. But second, I like to ask for slightly odd amounts of money. Example: I go to the bank teller to withdraw $80. They are so used to giving out the even hundred that sometimes they'll forget that you are only asking for $80  This mistake has been made once, and ALMOST been made a few more times, before the teller realized the mistake before handing over the cash. I didn't feel bad about taking the extra $20 because not only was I taking money from the greedy bank (I don't hold banks in much higher regard than casinos, especially my bank, as they prey on poor people, minorities, etc more so than the local competition,) and the fact that the teller was a quite attractive ~18 year old girl who won't have any trouble finding another job when she gets shitcanned for giving out too much money.

I understand some people might view my actions as unethical. But there's no concrete definition of right and wrong. Banks and casinos legally fleece people with great regularity, every hour of every day in casinos' case. I would NEVER keep excess money from a grocery store or a small business, etc. I even insisted that the guy who fixed my car take more money, because he charged me ridiculously low for labor.

But I'll be damned if I turn down free money. I literally moaned with pleasure when I topped off my gas tank with the bank's money. (I got some interesting looks from the people at other pumps) A casino is a place of vice. I will not expect myself to be "honest" there. As long as it's not illegal and not ripping off another gambler, anything goes once I am in the land of no clocks.

Blue, I think you need to find a new bank. There might be a bank or credit union in town that you don't loathe when you enter it.

Banks ARE Greedy SOBs...

But I don't have to lower myself to their level.

Treat others as you expect to be treated. That's
why I DO use no fee ATMs, plus they're open 24/7.

I just started playing BJ in the casinos, but if the
dealer makes any mistake and I notice it, I'll probably
point it out. Dealer can fix it if he wants to. Errors
likely balance out over the long run, just like variance.

i use atms more now that my bank doesnt take a fee for using anyone elses atm machines and refunds up to $25 a month in fees the other bank charges for using machines. Doesnt help the bank is hard to get an account with or only has one branch in the country though. but the good side is i use direct deposit for work and transfer any cash back and forth between a local bank and that one, its all online pretty much

I don't know how you delineate amongst these selections.

While it's true that a casino is designed to take your money, there is no one holding a gun to your head to go in there and play/win/lose. The bottom line is that it's still not your money. And if someone gets screwed in the process it's likely going to be the dealer, who is just another working stiff like you and me. Should he or she be more careful? Yep. But there's a variety of reasons mistakes might happen, not just carelessness. And in my opinion - not one of them justifies you taking chips that you didn't win.

I'm no fan of most banks, but they do provide a service and should be able to make a profit as well. I tend to bank at smaller, community banks (weird, they are the only solvent ones these days) which are like banks were 20 years ago. Otherwise, your choices would be much more limited than they are. Of course, if you just wait six months, this may become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

At the table there is win or lose. There is no give. And I am not going to post on this subject again because if you feel differently I don't think for a second I will change your mind(s) and again I have real problems with foisting my own morality on someone else. Just sayin.

I point out all error for or against me, other people do what they want, its none of my business. I also don't tip once an error has been made. its that "collusion" word the casinos are paranoid about.

actuary and EasyRhino summed it up very well! I'm a dealer myself and one could treat the situation as if it was a found wallet....you'll know what to do as you see fit at that moment...again...just don't be a "s'hit disturber" for someone else's hand...maintain a "happy" table and all will be good!
