KO Initial Running Count

Hi there.
I'm a learner, and have a ? about IRC in the KO Count.
I read a recommendation to start the count at -20 for a 6D game, which would make the Key Count for advantage moving to the player's side -4.
My question is, is there a reason for this specific IRC?
It seems to me that since it's easier to add and subtract positive numbers, if one were to begin the count at a higher number, say 8, and then use a corresponding Key Count of 24, it would be easier to keep count, but would the math check out? Or is there a more complicated formula to figuring out what my new Key Count would be?
Thanks for any help, advice, or reference.

No complicated formula. You could make the IRC 100 if you wanted to, as long as you adjust the key count accordingly.
