Majestic Star & Ameristar BJ specs

I used to play poker at the Ameristar (used to be a Resorts). Can't speak for the BJ there as I have never played it, but if you have CBJN, take a look. I don't really think any of the Chicago-area games are that playable. I think there might be a couple $25 shoe games in the area that are marginally OK.

As for the safety of the area, I have to disagree with most of the posters here, it's really not that bad. These casinos are built in barren industrial zones surrounded by working-class mixed-race neighborhoods. Actually a lot of neighborhoods in Hammond are mostly white. It's no problem to go to a gas station at any time of the day around there, just use common sense.

Where you do NOT want to go is anywhere east of the casinos in Gary. That area looks like a war zone. I'm not sure what goes on there but you probably don't want to find out. Fortunately, I can't think of any reason why you would travel through that area.

Yeah, Hammond isn't that bad, and East Chicago is mostly Mexican barrio. But Gary is pretty rough. Honestly, it's one of the worst places in the US.

I remember going to The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago once and made a wrong turn on the way out. I ended up in a neighborhood (I'm using that term losely) like I've never seen before and never want to see again! Busted glass everywhere, burnt out homes, garbage all over the streets and despicable looking characters everywhere. I pretty much had the pedal to the metal until I found my way back out.

A bit off topic, but just a few miles away.

Hoseshoe Hammond is decent but there are better tables in the MW with surrender option and better pen. Played there once about a year ago and got a meal comp for 2 for about two hours play at a ten dollar table. Since then I get about two mailers a month with all kinds of table, slot and food comps. The location isn't that bad. You could prob get comped and stay in Joliet at the Harrahs or Chicago DT is only 30 min away.

It's far from the best in the Midwest. I think the pen may be over 1.5 cut off, too.
