monorail bankrupcy

Can you believe the monorail filed for bankrupcy. @ $5 a pop, how can that thing be losing money? I know it costs alot to build, but now that its built, it should be making money. I ride it alot, because it is convenient to where I live in vegas, but it really isn't that conveinet a way to travel. you end up way in the back of the properties and have like a mile walk. lol I guess that will end any talk of expanding down to the airport.

Debt service, operating expenses, maintenance expenses, etc.

It should be free (it was at one time, wasn't it?) and subsidized by the casinos/taxes. Then, ridership would be way up and people would be spending more time in the casinos, losing money, rather than walking up and down the strip. It's similar to poor pen requiring more shuffling, leading to less revenue-producing time.

They're probably carrying a sh!tload of debt, just like the casinos they connect to. Not to mention the tired comedy bits they pipe over the loudspeakers probably scared off a few $5 riders. Seriously, though, I completely agree with you that the Monorail is a great way to travel when it's convenient for you. I bought a 3 day pass last year for March Madness when I was shuffling between the Hilton and the south strip and it was perfect. But it makes no sense for most Vegas patrons, especially if your destination is on the west side of the Strip.

Vegas could use some good mass transit, especially between downtown and the Strip. Cab rides are expensive, and buses are... well... buses. Slow and sometimes dangerous.

Just as a general thought Bankruptcy has many uses:

Although the general public bankruptcy equates it to poor management, etc.., to AP's in the business world, bankruptcy would be considered another tool in the shed (although not a reusable resource and as a last resort).

The management could be top tier but bad business decisions, economic's, etc. may have hampered the best of planning.

Now they have the chance to renegotiate contracts, renegotiations or relief of debt, and more. Who knows maybe in the future they will able to offer additional services that improve on there routes.

How many times has the Trump name been associated with filing for bankcruptcy protection but meanwhile "Donald" is not living on the street.

Someone (the public eventually) ends up paying the price for bankcruptcy's but at least we, we meaning every citizen, has the option available to us instead of a firing squad.

I can't recall how many times I've rode the monorail and I've been the only one on it. They totally dropped the ball with the monorail it should have been built right down the centre of the strip.

Monorails seem to fail in most cities. Just look at North Haverbrook, Ogdenville, Brockway and Springfield.

Only Springfield's was a disaster. North Haverbrook, Ogdenville and Brockway were all a tremendous success. (at least according to Lyle Lanley)

And the only thing that could have made it viable would have been service to the airport.

Don't entertain any thought of that being an oversight. Airport transportation is what is euphemistically called a "controlled industry" and any planner who attempted to get between the suckers and the first rip-off they encounter in the city (the airport vans) would surely end up dead before he got away with it.

Airport vans are a rip-off? Really? What would you consider to be a fair price from the airport to Downtown or the Strip?
I think they are tremendous bargins, particularly CLS which has never let me down.

Deuce buses have killed the monorail. I personally prefer Deuce over the rail. Wongers can "visit" economically all casinos along the bus route from downtown to uptown. Hey for 5 bucks, you get an 1 day pass to hop in and out of the buses just like the frequently-run-AC-Jitneys (except... Jitneys charge Wongers hell lots more than 5 bucks for a day of riding and wonging).

I personally, don't care for the Duece for strip travel. If you get on anywhere on the strip going south, you are standing. Going North, unless you get on at the very lower end of strip (mgm, trop), you are standing. The duece bus seems to be the tourist mode of travel. Try standing crammed in this thing in the summer months when a few people went a little lite on the deodorant! :eek: Since I am located near the middle of the strip, and I like to walk, I can walk anywhere on the strip. Occasionally if there are some weather issues or I am just tired I will monorail it home. For trips downtown, rather than taking the sardine can...I mean duece, I walk east to paradise, which is about the same distance from my residence as the strip (slightly more than 1/4 mile) and catch the 108 at about half the price of the duece. I also use the 108 as airpot transportation. It takes me 12 minutes and costs $2. It runs between airport and downtown. Of course not a good choice if you have several bags.

If (and when) I move to my condo (Silverado Ranch, I-215 area) which is my best option for daily trips to strip and/or downtown-----my own vehicle or public transportation?

Rt 110 and rt 117 service the Silverado ranch area. However neither will take you directly to the strip or directly downtown. The 117 would take you to the South Strip Transfer Center, where you could then transfer to the duece for the strip of one of several buses heading downtown. You can check the maps and schedules at their website RTCsouthernnevada.com

I would not recommend selling your vehicle and relying on public transit. Although public transit is quite good and reliable here, things are spread out and you really need a car. Plus you will want to drive to the outlying casinos (like station casino) that have better rules. :)

You also may want a car to occasionally get to some of those outlying "Ranches", named after certain mammals..........Eh???????:laugh:

Highly doubtful. Hate to pay for it. But I guess it's never "free" is it?
What kewl said makes sense to me. Having a vehicle allows much more independence for sure.
I'd like to move out there this spring but it's all dependent on the sale of my business. It's not the ideal time for selling.

I couldn't imagine living in Vegas without a car. The city is just too spread out. Everytime I pass a bunch of people standing out in the sun waiting for a bus, my heart goes out to them.
