New Casino Opening!

Be there or be square.

Ad: Coming soon: The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas casino resort, on the Strip between Bellagio and CityCenter. Billed as a sophisticated contemporary lodging, it is due to start checking in guests Dec. 15. $300 rooms are the lowest I could find for that date. But I saw $150 starting rates for a slow day in February.
It will also feature a casino. I know a lot of you like to be there when a new store opens. My friend from Virginia, who heard from his friend in City Center, tells me the Cosmopolitan casino will be opening in December, exact date still unknown. But in an already stretched field for talented individuals, I understand the eye-in-the-sky surveillance crew will not exactly be the cream of the crop.

It is exciting to be at the openings. Good people watching fun. Last year Aria opened pretty much same time. Mid week, mid december. That gives them a week to work out the kinks before the new years week which is busy and then all of January is busy with conventions up until superbowl weekend. Last year I was out in the street for the fireworks and checking out the crown but I didn't go in that night. I went inside Aria the next morning when it wasn't crowded and took a good look around. :) I haven't seen any info on the cosmo opening. Is it at night with fireworks?? :)

Opening a locals casino on the strip seems pretty dumb to me.
People go the strip for larger than life experiances. If they want a local feel, they can go to the mall closest to their house.

The one article I read, which is the last one Aslan linked mentions several times they are trying to create a local neighborhood feel.
It works for me. It's right in my neighborhood.

I read in the rj that the grand opening with fireworks will be on 1/1/11. I'm afraid I'm going to miss that one.

That can't be right. They already have fireworks up and down the strip on new years eve, so that would be nothing special.

Well you know that everything in the media is the truth. I was hoping for a fireworks display on the 15th.

From the pics I've seen, the gaming floor will look kind of like Aria, but with more blues, purples and reds, and less golds, silvers and browns.

I think it looks wonderful.

I believe the "neighborhood feel" was restricted to the several restaurants they will feature, and it's definitely not neighborhood in the sense of Arizona Charlie's or a Station casino. The Cosmopolitan is smack at ground zero and it's rooms and condos are expensive. From one of their articles..."the resort will unveil a boutique collection, a thoughtfully curated line-up of avant-garde boutiques and youthful brands known for their singular personality and fresh sense of style." Looks to me like they're aiming at a higher class of Vegas visitor who can afford the amenities and fare of City Center, Bellagio and their own complex. It will be interesting to see if they can pull it off. The strip is getting saturated with high end hotels and casinos. Not much for us commoners (I don't mean to include you) except to gawk at the lavish displays of wealth and drop a few dollars (I don't mean to include me) at their tables. I love the Bellagio and the Aria, but the only way you could get me to stay there is to comp me the rooms. Actually, that goes for many of the strip hotels.

Who is going to buy all these high end condos? Condo prices at the Veer (in City Center) are down 30%-50% from what they were one year ago when they first went on the market and it is my understanding less than 10% have been sold. Prices at Signature at MGM have fallen 75% from their 2006 opening. Trump Tower same deal. And yet they continue to build more. Who is going to buy all these units??

From what I see the Cosmo is going more for an "indie" feel. The brands are not the usual haute-coutoure suspects (i.e. Vuitton etc) but relatively less-known brands. That plus the Art-o-mat machines seem to me that the Cosmo is going for something more alternative-indie-ish than, say, Aria or Bellagio ever will.

That said, its fair to say Cosmo is mid-high-end, although I don't think it will be as extreme as Bellagio or Wynncore. I'd estimate it to be at a similar level, or slightly lower than Aria.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. I find Bellagio is a touch pretentious, although in a fun way.

When I go "high end", it's the Four Queens instead of the EC or Harrahs rather than the I.P.
I haven't been on the western side of the Strip since they took the stuffed meatballs off the Happy Hour menu at Maggianos. I've no interest in City Center, nor in this new megolopolis.

Some of the best lower level BJ on the strip, is on the lower west side of the strip at MGM's low end property.

I don't frequent the strip, other than an occasional stay at a Harrahs property, or if Wynn sends me some freebies.
I've never even gotten a Vegas MGM players club card. Had one back when the Edgewater was a Circus Circus property but that was at least seven years ago. I've dug a nice little niche for myself and stick to my "home" casinos" so to speak. I keep meaning to hit those games but theres never enough time.

I heard a rumor that they were about to take down the Fountainebleau, a 68 floor complex just north of the Riviera. The inside of the last fifteen floors never were completed when construction was halted due to the economic downturn and the inability to obtain financing. The rumor is that the owner, Carl Icahn, will take it down to the ground and sell it off for scrap. The land itself is allegedly pricier than the building. The total property including land cost about $3 billion to build. Currently, Venetian is rumored to be buying the furniture and shipping it to their Sands Bethlehem casino in Pennsylvania.

I researched it and found that Icahn announced in August that he planned to sit on the building until the economy improves. Personally, I think that is really what is going on, and any sale of furniture was possibly because by the time the FB opens, it will be out of style. Also, it may represent only the last 15 floors of furniture, which could probably furnish the entire Sands Bethlehem casino 300-room motel. The FB will be a 3,815 room hotel.

There was also a rumor that they might open the FB without access to the top 15 unfinished floors. Allegedly, they were talking about installing safety equipment (sprinkler system?) in the top 15 floors. I was unable to confirm that any such plan is under way.
