If you are going to us it in a car you need something you can use in the confined space. A screw driver, an collapsable attack baton, a cat's paw, a blackjack, a tazer, a knife and the mag light. Don't forget a mag light can be used to temporarily blind an attacker at night before you beat him to a bloody pulp with it. Don't let the news get to you. I've been to AC more than 100 times probably and have never (knock on wood) been a victim of any crime. Nevertheless , the best defense is to use your common sense. Be aware of your surroundings and if anything looks suspicious, react accordingly. Do not walk anywhere at night other than the boardwalk and Pacific Ave. (high traffic areas) If you have to go from one to the other, it's best to walk through the casinos. Never make eye contact with a stranger when walking on the street. That invites interaction which you do not want. Walk at a brisk pace. (It's good exercise and will help you to determine if someone is following you.) While walking in what you perceive to be a dangerous area, have you hand on your cell phone ready to call the police if need be.
If you're driving in your car, make sure the windows are rolled up and do not ever lower your window for a stranger. If you have to, you can use your car as a weapon. (If they're standing by the driver side door, you can quickly open up your door to knock them over or at least stun them, and then you can gun it)

Powerful lights are a good idea. I'd go further and get a "tactical" style light from Surefire or somewhere similar.
They're very disabling to an attacker, and also effectively (and harmlessly) repel beggars and other undesirables who might get a little close for comfort. And they're 100% legal everywhere, including on airplanes.

When I first visited AC back 4 years ago, I did not know my way around. I wanted to visit another casino by the Jitney. If you know the Taj, then you know that the bus line is a block away from the front door, so that standing there waiting for it you are very much alone on a not heavily traveled section of Pacific Avenue, at least not the night I was there, rain and all. Farther down Pacific, Caesar's, Trump Plaza, and other casinos are smack on Pacific, but not by the Taj and the Showboat. I managed without an incident, but looking back it was stupid standing there with a large bankroll in my pocket. At least I was not so stupid as to not be scared. I was ready to take evasive actions at the drop of a hat.
One other incident that taught me a lesson was in Vegas. You may walk somewhere on the strip in perfect safety in the early evening, but if you wait until 3 or 4 a.m. your return trip may be a matter of life and death. If I ever make that mistake again, I will be sure to take a cab, even though it's only several (lonely) blocks and a few deserted corridors and stairwells.
