I've always understood it is proper to split 4's against a 5 or 6 when DAS is allowed. Otherwise just hit it. I dont play single deck ,but i would guess it would be proper to double down since DAS is RARELY allowed.

It is interesting, up here in seattle das is allowed generally, even so I have had bad luck splitting them, so I just hit them, or occasionally, if the true count is +5 or higher I will double down on a dealer 4, 5, or 6 when I have an eight. Never Split them in a high count situation, that is for sure, and as a general rule I would say: Never split 4s.

In a high count situation you want to get more money on the table, especially against a 5 or 6 since the bust % is higher with the high count.

 I wish I had $.14 for every time I've seen someone not play split and double after split correctly! Not just with 4's either. I recall not too long ago, I played on a 6d table where DAS was allowed. Not only that, but there seemed to be no limit to the number of splits. I had 8's and the dealer had a Face. I split, re-split, and resplit again to 5 hands. One was a double down 8/3. The count was low so I had minimum bet out thank goodness, but I lost all 5 hands. But By God, I played it right!

Wrong It is always advantageous to split 4's against a 5 or 6 in a DAS game, especially in the high counts!

Never split 4's!!!

You never split 4's 5's or 10's!!! With a pair of 4's you will usually just hit it! If the dealer has an up card of 5-6 it is a very marginal double!!! If you look around the table and see a lot of low cards double if you see a lot of high cards just hit!!!:

Cardcounter....you need to check your Basic Strategy card. Your statement about NOT splitting 4's is just wrong. Sorry for being so blunt, but I hear that at almost every table I sit at. Older published strategy suggested a double on 5 or 6 but it is considered today that you are better off splitting the 4's against a 5 or 6 instead of doubling if you can double after splitting.

Cardcounter is a dealer at a Tahoe shop that has mostly single deck games where there is no DAS. I do remember one very poor six deck shoe in the place that did have DAS but perhaps he mainly deals the single deck.

It's not wrong if he is referring to a NoDAS strategy. The debate of whether or not to split 4's is just a matter of what the rules of the game are.

I made that statement folks because it doesn't matter what table rules are: Players and Dealers are always stating that you should never split "Fs" (Fours, Fives or Faces) at nearly all the places I play. I stated that you do split if you can double after split.
